Thunder assign Daniel Orton to the D-League.

Orton has appeared in just one game this season and is the definition of a project player.

The Thunder is likely to bring back the recently waived Daniel Orton.

The team has an open roster spot following the James Harden trade, and with Hasheem Thabeet as Kendrick Perkins' primary backup, bringing back Orton as an insurance policy makes plenty of sense.

The Thunder waived Daniel Orton, Andy Rautins and Hollis Thompson on Saturday.

Orton was widely viewed as one of the most talented big men in the 2010 draft, but his career has yet to get off the ground. Thompson and Rautins are also unlikely to crack a rotation this year.

Thunder sign C Daniel Orton.

Orton signed a non-guaranteed contract for training camp and he has an uphill battle to make OKC's regular season roster. Knee surgery cost him his rookie campaign with Orlando, he averaged 2.8 points, 2.4 rebounds and 0.6 blocks in 2011-12, and the Magic declined his third-year qualifying offer.

Coach Stan Van Gundy has been highly critical of Daniel Orton over the last few days.

Orton has struggled badly in a backup role behind Glen Davis over the last three games. After Saturday's loss, Van Gundy said that Orton "gave us nothing" and added that the center needs "to be a lot more disciplined." Even if Dwight Howard gets traded this summer, it's hard to see Van Gundy giving the raw Orton a major role. The 21-year-old needs a ton more seasoning.

Daniel Orton started for injured Glen Davis (knee) in Monday's win over the Sixers, scoring six points on 3-of-3 shooting with six rebounds and one block in 24 minutes.

Davis says that he's going to return for Wednesday's game against the Celtics, so any conversation about Orton's value is short-lived, anyway. The 6'10/225 product will be called upon if Davis suffers a setback, but owners that made the add early this week can pitch him back to the wire.
