Butler agreed to a five-year, $90 million deal with the Bulls on Wednesday, ESPN's Brian Windhorst reports. The fifth year of the deal is a player option.

Butler was expected back in Chicago all along, but it was initially thought that he may seek a shorter-term deal in hopes or re-entering free agency under the higher salary cap in a few years. However, Butler instead opted to take more guaranteed money, and he's now locked in as one of Chicago's long-term assets, joining backcourt mate Derrick Rose. Butler has improved dramatically since coming into the league out of Marquette, and the Bulls will need him to take the next step forward, especially with the inconsistent play, at times last season, of Rose and Joakim Noah.

Butler, who is a restricted free agent this offseason, is seeking out shorter-term offer sheets, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! reports.

After his 2014-15 breakout season, Butler is set for a big pay day. However, with the NBA's salary cap set to increase in the next couple of seasons, Butler will want to take advantage of that by becoming a free agent once again at that time. Butler will reportedly resist the Bulls' plans to offer him a five-year, max deal, but given that he is restricted, Chicago will likely match whatever short-term offer sheet Butler gets from another team.

Butler played in 65 games for the Bulls this season and averaged 20.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.1 three-pointers a game.

Butler had an exceptional campaign for the Bulls and won the Most Improved Player Award. He only averaged 13.1 points a game in 2013-14, so he really took a big jump offensively. He continued to play heavy minutes as well as he averaged almost 39 minutes a game. He heads into the summer as a restricted free agent and is likely to receive a max offer some someone. The Bulls have said they want to keep Butler and he has said he wants to stay in Chicago, so early signs point to him staying with the team. As some of the Bulls core players continue to age and deal with various injury problems, Butler could be a key player for the franchise moving forward. Expect big things from him again next season.

Butler finished with 18 points (5-14 FG, 2-7 3Pt, 6-7 FT), two rebounds, one assist, two steals and one blocked shot over 35 minutes during Wednesday's loss to the Cavaliers.

Butler was relatively quiet in this game, as the Cavaliers seemed to step up their defense. Butler matched a playoff-low of two rebounds, while also setting a new playoff-low with one assist, so all-around he just wasn't as successful as he's been so far in the playoffs. Butler has averaged 23.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.5 steals over eight games this postseason, so look for his numbers to increase as he heads back home to Chicago for game 3 on Friday.
