Butler announced his retirement Feb. 6 in an article published by The Players' Tribune.
EDGE Analysis
The 37-year-old overcame a rough upbringing to earn a scholarship to the University of Connecticut, where he blossomed into a star before declaring for the 2002 NBA Draft following his sophomore season. Butler's success carried over to the pros, with the forward enjoying a productive 14-year career that included two All-Star appearances and an NBA title with the Mavericks during the 2010-11 season. After concluding his career in 2015-16 with the Kings, Butler has turned his attention to broadcasting.

Butler was waived by the Kings on Monday, Shams Charania of Yahoo! Sports reports.
EDGE Analysis
Butler recently exercised a $1.55 million player option for the 2016-17 season, so the Kings should still have to pay his salary despite letting him go. It does offer the Kings another roster spot, which they could use to shore up some depth options elsewhere on the roster. The 36-year-old could find a deal with a contender looking for some veteran leadership off the bench.

Butler announced Tuesday that he would exercise his $1.55 million player option for the 2016-17 season, Shams Charania of Yahoo! Sports reports.
EDGE Analysis
At this stage of his career, the 36-year-old Butler is little more than a positive veteran influence in the locker room, and the 2016-17 campaign could represent his final year in the league. Butler appeared in 17 contests with the Kings last season, averaging 3.7 points, 1.3 rebounds and 0.6 assists across 10.4 minutes per game. With the Kings likely to continue prioritizing the development of their younger wing players over Butler, don't expect the aging small forward to see much action during the upcoming season.

Butler will not play in the Kings' season finale Wednesday, Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee reports.
EDGE Analysis
Butler will end the season having played in only 17 games and posting averages of 3.7 points and 1.3 rebounds. At age 36, Butler may considering hanging it up this summer, though he does hold a $1.5M player option to return to Sacramento next season. If Butler opts against retirement, it's possible he could decline the option and look to join a contending organization.

Butler played eight minutes in Tuesday's 115-107 loss to the Trail Blazers, contributing two points (1-1 FG).
EDGE Analysis
Butler saw some run with five rotation members sitting out Tuesday due to rest or injury, but still didn't get enough minutes to make a real impact in the box score. The Kings figure to hold some key players out of the remaining four games while the team finishes out another lottery-bound season, but expect coach George Karl to give younger reserves like James Anderson and Ben McLemore more opportunities rather than the 36-year-old Butler.

Butler contributed nine points (2-4 FG, 5-5 FT), four rebounds, and two assists in 18 minutes during the Kings' 115-108 loss to the Pistons on Friday.
EDGE Analysis
Butler's nine points were a season high, and his four rebounds and two assists both matched season highs as well. Butler has appeared in four of the last six games, but the 36-year-old is almost strictly a veteran voice in the locker room at this stage of his career.

Butler has only played in nine games this season for the Kings.
EDGE Analysis
After playing in 78 games last season for the Pistons, Butler has only played in nine games this season, averaging 10 minutes a contest. The 35-year-old isn't likely to see his role expanded much the second half of the season, barring any injuries to the team. It appears that Butler has taken on more of a mentorship role with the Kings.

Butler (coach's decision) didn't play in Tuesday's 117-116 double-overtime loss to the Mavericks.
EDGE Analysis
The Kings were short five players due to injury Monday, but even that wasn't enough for Butler to see the floor, despite the game requiring an extra 10 minutes to be decided. Butler looks like trade bait for a Kings team likely headed to the lottery, so expect him to ride the pine regularly until the front office is able to deal him elsewhere.

Butler posted one steal in eight minutes of action Thursday's blowout loss against the Celtics.
EDGE Analysis
Butler hadn't logged a game since Nov. 19, and although he was apparently dealing with a knee injury, he was probably available to play for the most part. Given the Kings had a blowout loss on Thursday, he saw minutes on the court and didn't add much in the process. That being said, he'll be deemed healthy moving forward, but not likely to play in most close games.

Butler (knee) hasn't played in a game for the Kings since their Nov. 19 loss to the Heat.
EDGE Analysis
Butler suffered a sprained left ankle at some point early last week and hasn't played since. The Kings listed him as probable as recently as Saturday's game against the Warriors, however, and after he failed to play in that contest along with Monday's win over the Mavericks, it seems as though Butler just isn't a part of the rotation right now. He'll continue to retain the day-to-day tag until the Kings formally take him off the injury report or use him in a game.
