Stoudemire signed a one-year contract Wednesday with Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv, Eurohoops.net reports.

Stoudemire's last NBA action came in the 2015-16 season with the Heat, but the six-time All-Star has continued to keep his career going abroad the last four years. After stints with Hapoel Jerusalem in the Israeli League and the Fujian Sturgeons of the Chinese Basketball Association, Stoudemire will head to the EuroLeague for the first time. The 37-year-old is presumably hoping to parlay a strong showing with Maccabi Tel Aviv into a second act in the NBA, though that's likely a longshot at this point.

The six-time All-Star previously entertained a return to the NBA in February 2018 while taking part in the BIG3, but never gained any serious traction in those efforts. The audition in Las Vegas may represent Stoudemire's last chance to resurface at the NBA level, though it's unclear if he impressed teams enough in the workout to earn even a training-camp invitation.

The deal is contingent on Stoudemire not receiving a contract offer from an NBA team, but it's difficult to imagine the six-time All-Star heading back stateside now that he's 35 years old and more than two years removed from his last appearance in the league. The veteran center, who is expected to play in the BIG3 league this summer, has an ownership stake in Hapoel Jerusalem and helped lead the club to an Israeli League championship in his lone season with the team in 2016-17.

He'll head to Jerusalem, where he'll play for a team that he's currently a co-manager for. To go along with their participation in the Israeli Winner League, Stoudemire's new team is also looking to have a strong showing at the 2017 Eurocup, so his signing comes as a much-needed addition to help those aspirations come true. Stoudemire is highly unlikely to return to the NBA at any point, but his desire to continue playing basketball is at least worth mentioning.

Over the six-time NBA All-Star's 14 seasons in the NBA, Stoudemire finished his career with 846 appearances and averaged 18.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per game with the Suns, Knicks, Mavericks, and Heat.

Stoudemire (coach's decision) didn't play in Friday's 103-91 Game 6 win over the Raptors.

The writing was on the wall for Stoudemire to fall out of the rotation when he was sent to the bench for Game 6 after starting the previous two games. Though the Heat are thin in the frontcourt with Chris Bosh (blood clots) out for the postseason and Hassan Whiteside (knee) possibly in line for a similar fate, it appears coach Erik Spoelstra is content to lean on the small-ball lineups that were successful in Friday's win.

Stoudemire will come off the bench for Friday's matchup with the Raptors, Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press reports.

Stoudemire has started the previous two games for Miami due to Hassan Whiteside's absence. He was struggling physically to handle the load however, and only managed to play three minutes after starting Game 5. The Heat will opt to go small with Luol Deng at center.

Stoudemire entered the starting lineup, but he scored just six points (2-3 FG, 2-2 FT) to go along with three rebounds and a steal in 12 minutes during Monday's win over the Raptors.

EDGE Analysis

The veteran got the start with Hassan Whiteside (knee) sidelined, but with Toronto missing starting center Jonas Valanciunas, both teams resorted to smaller lineups for long stretches. Stoudemire could still have a role to play if Whiteside continues to sit, but the possibility of a repeat of the aforementioned tactics limits his upside.

Stoudemire will draw the start in Monday's Game 4 against the Raptors, Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.

This was considered the most likely option for the Heat to go with Hassan Whiteside sidelined. Stoudamire's role has been limited in the series thus far, playing just 5.3 minutes in three games. However, when Whiteside missed a two-week stretch back in January, Stoudamire saw his minutes jump to 22.4 minutes per game. In total, he posted 9.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.0 steals, and 0.7 blocks during that six game stretch. While he is physically limited, Stoudamire has shown he is capable of putting together a respectable workload in the 20 minute range.
