Beltre has been slowed by a calf injury during camp. The third baseman will play for a week with the Rangers before joining the Dominican Republic for the second round of the WBC, assuming he doesn't have a setback with his calf. "We'll see if I'm healthy enough," said Beltre. "I want to be 100 percent and not force it."

The Rangers are being cautious with Beltre early in spring training, and he'll miss the first round of the World Baseball Classic because of a minor calf injury. Beltre played a big role for the Dominican Republic in the 2006 WBC and should start at third base when he returns.

The Rangers are calling it a calf "tweak" and are simply being cautious. Beltre played a big role for the Dominican Republic in 2006 but then sat out of the event in 2009. He should start at third base once he's cleared.

Adrian Beltre will not require surgery to repair an abdominal issue that bothered him at the end of the season.

Beltre didn't have to miss any time with the injury, but he was used some in the DH spot in order to limit his chances of aggravating the ailment. "Adrian is feeling well and not reporting any issues," assistant general manager Thad Levine said Thursday. "We have complete confidence in our medical staff, and they're not recommending surgery."
