Rangers claimed INF Donnie Murphy off waivers from the Cubs.

Murphy, 31, hit .255/.318/.530 with 11 home runs in 163 plate appearances with the Cubs last season. He'll give the Rangers another option at second base as they attempt to get by without Jurickson Profar. As for the Cubs, it appears likely that Mike Olt will make the Opening Day roster.

Cubs avoided arbitration with 3B Donnie Murphy by agreeing to a one-year, $825,000 contract.

He could wind up making $1.175 million if he hits all his incentives. Murphy hit eight homers in August for the Cubs after being called up before predictably cooling off in September. The 30-year-old will likely operate in a utility role in 2014.

Donnie Murphy is day-to-day with a sore left wrist.

Murphy is not in the Cubs' starting lineup on Wednesday and it's not exactly certain when he might return. He has a cool .870 OPS in 37 major league games this year.

Donnie Murphy went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI against the Reds on Tuesday.

Murphy's hot start in early August was written off as a flash in the pan by many, including in these parts, but he's managed to maintain it over the course of the last month. The homer was Murphy's 10th to go with a respectable .282/.352/.618 line. The 30-year-old has managed 20 RBI and scored 20 runs in 110 at-bats with the big club this year.

Donnie Murphy hit a game-tying, two-run homer off of Stephen Strasburg with two outs in the ninth inning of Thursday's loss to the Nationals.

Murphy had struck out in each of his first three plate appearances, but he stunned Strasburg by lofting a ball into the left-field bleachers to knot things up at four. The 30-year-old journeyman has now gone deep eight times in 16 games since being called up by the Cubs. He'll return to earth soon enough, but ride the wave while you can.

Donnie Murphy went 2-for-4 with his seventh home run against the Nationals on Tuesday.

Another day, another Donnie Murphy home run. He's now got seven in 48 at-bats, producing a robust and wildly unsustainable .333/.396/.854 line since being called up. We keep waiting for the other shoe to drop -- and it will drop -- but in the meantime, the 30-year-old is getting hard to ignore in mixed leagues.

Donnie Murphy hit a pair of solo homers Monday against the Nationals.

That's six homers in 44 at-bats for the red-hot Murphy. He's always had decent pop -- he had 18 homers in 577 major league at-bats entering the season -- but this is getting ridiculous now. He'll remain the Cubs' third baseman until he cools off. He really shouldn't have any lasting value in mixed leagues.

Donnie Murphy stayed hot Friday, going 2-for-2 with an RBI and a walk against the Cardinals.

Murphy is hitting .333 with four homers, three doubles and nine RBI in 33 at-bats since his callup. The Cubs will keep using him until he slows down. It should happen before much longer, though.

Donnie Murphy went 3-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI in the Cubs' 5-2 win over the Phillies on Wednesday.

Murphy has certainly come out of the gate swinging. Since being recalled on August 3, Murphy is 4-for-9 with three home runs and seven RBI. He's got an extensive track record of performing well below his current level of production, so he's heading toward a cliff in the near future. But it's worth riding him while he's hot in NL-only leagues.
