Batting eighth for the first time this year, Miguel Montero homered in the bottom of the eighth to break a 2-2 tie in the Diamondbacks' 3-2 win over the Phillies on Friday.

Montero opened the year in the cleanup spot, though the sixth spot has always made the most sense for him. It was his .198 average that got him dropped all of the way to eighth tonight. Of course, he's far better than that, and he'll probably be a solid mixed-league catcher the rest of the way.

Miguel Montero has been dropped to eighth in the Diamondbacks lineup for Friday night's game against the Phillies.

D'Backs manager Kirk Gibson was quick to say that he didn't expect it to be a permanent move in the lineup. Perhaps Gibby is just trying to to take the pressure off Montero in an effort to get his bat going. He's been abysmal at the dish thus far, hitting .198/.306/.270 with two homers, 12 RBI and a 25/18 K/BB ratio through 32 games.

Miguel Montero went 2-for-3 with a homer, a walk and three runs scored Friday against the Padres.

It was Montero's first multihit game since way back on April 7, and the homer was his first since April 2. Hopefully, his long slump has now come to an end.

Miguel Montero is batting .300/.385/.433 with one homer and seven RBI through the first nine games this season.

Montero has been batting cleanup against right-handers, which is obviously a plumb spot in a pretty good D'Backs lineup. He'll be a top-10 fantasy catcher this season as long as he can stay healthy.

Miguel Montero was scratched from a second straight game Tuesday because of a swollen right thumb.

The Diamondbacks thought Montero was dealing with a splinter so they had the thumb drained on Monday. But nothing was found beyond the puss. "Hopefully he can play [Wednesday]," manager Kirk Gibson told reporters Tuesday in camp. "It's much better. It looked like it might be getting infected yesterday, so we've been treating that for that, and it seems like it's been calming down."

Miguel Montero was scratched from Monday's Cactus League lineup because of a sliver in his right thumb.

It's no big deal. Montero is expected to be back in there Tuesday.
