Montero has now hit safely in five straight games, collecting six RBI over that span. After hitting a miserable .230/.318/.344 with 11 homers and 42 RBI over 116 games last season, the former All-Star has started out decently enough, slashing .280/.339/.380 with eight RBI over 50 at-bats. He limped to a 51/110 K/BB rate in 2013, and currently sits at a 4/5 mark.

Well, that's something. Montero is hitting higher than he might otherwise hit for Arizona because otherwise the Diamondbacks would start off their lineup with five right-handers and finish it with three left-handers. So far, though, Montero hasn't capitalized, hitting .233 with one homer and four RBI in 12 games.

Montero's 10th home run came in the seventh inning and capped Arizona's scoring in the 10-4 loss. The veteran catcher has collected exactly two hits in four of his last five games. He carries an underwhelming .235/.319/.355 slash line.

Montero was cleared to return to action after getting through a half-dozen rehab games with no issues. He returns to a .228/.316/.345 batting line over 92 games for the D'Backs this season.

Montero is scheduled to play seven innings with the Diamondbacks' rookie-league affiliate Saturday before being reevaluated. Willie Bloomquist (hand) is also expected to be activated next week.

Miguel Montero (back) was scheduled to catch in a rehab game with the Diamondbacks' Arizona League club Monday.

He'll catch 3-5 innings Monday, take Tuesday off and then catch around five innings on Wednesday. The D'Backs are hoping that Montero will be ready to catch a full game by Saturday. He could move his rehab assignment up to Triple-A Reno next week. "We'll see how he's playing, how he's feeling, how he's swinging," manager Kirk Gibson said.

Montero has been doing baseball activities since Friday and appears to be progressing steadily. He's eligible to return Tuesday, so as long as he gets through a couple rehab games OK, he should be activated early next week.

Montero has been sidelined since July 29 with a lower back strain, but was cleared for baseball activities Friday and continues to move in the right direction. Assuming he avoids setbacks, he should return from the DL later this month.

Montero doesn't have any structural damage and was able to resume baseball activities Tuesday, though it's not clear at this point how long he'll be sidelined. Wil Nieves is handling the catching duties for the D'Backs while Montero is out.
