Nick Markakis RF ATL 10 Months

Nick Markakis went 4-for-4 with a triple and two doubles as the Orioles crushed the Phillies 15-4 on Friday.

Markakis figured to be the Orioles' leadoff man, but manager Buck Showalter has been giving David Lough a long look in that role this spring. While Markakis hit second behind Lough today, that will be Manny Machado's spot once he's healthy. It makes one wonder just where Markakis might hit to begin the year. He's not going to be much of an asset in homers or steals, so much of his value hinges on him batting high in the lineup and racking up a ton of at-bats in front of superior hitters. He still looks like the best option in the leadoff spot from here.

Nick Markakis homered and singled against the Yankees on Thursday.

The homer off David Huff was just his second in 2 1/2 months. It was a solo shot, of course: he has one multi-RBI game in the last three months (two RBI on Aug. 14).

Nick Markakis is back in the Orioles' starting lineup on Thursday night against the Yankees.

Markakis was on the bench Wednesday because he showed up late to Camden Yards following the birth of his third child. He's batting .271/.323/.357 with nine home runs and 55 RBI in 143 games this season for Baltimore.

Nick Markakis' wife has given birth and the outfielder is hoping to return to the Orioles on Wednesday.

Baltimore is hosting the Yankees, so Markakis presumably could make it to the park. Buck Showalter should apprise the media of his status shortly.

Nick Markakis has logged a .367/.412/.400 batting line in 34 July plate appearances.

It's nice to see after Markakis limped to a .229 average in June. Owners are no doubt a little disappointed by Markakis' power output in 2013, as he's hit just one home run since June 1 and logged only eight on the season. He's slugging 49 points below his career average.

As expected. Markakis missed the last two games in Houston in order to attend in his grandmother's funeral.
