Angels signed RHP Brandon Lyon to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Lyon was released by the Mets last July after posting a 4.93 ERA and 1.63 WHIP in 37 relief appearances. He then signed on with the Red Sox but never got a look at the major league level. The 34-year-old right-hander will struggle to make Anaheim's roster.

Lyon was cut loose by the Mets last July after posting a 4.98 ERA and 1.63 WHIP in 37 appearances. He was quickly scooped up by Red Sox but then exercised an opt-out clause when he wasn't called up. The veteran reliever can surely be had on a minor league deal.

Lyon allowed just one earned run over 5 1/3 innings with Triple-A Pawtucket and chose to exercise his opt-out clause when it became apparent that there wasn't a spot for him in the Red Sox' bullpen. He'll now look for a better opportunity elsewhere.

Brandon Lyon said Tuesday morning that he's not aiming to take Frank Francisco's closer job.
"I'm here to make everyone else better, and be consistent," said Lyon, who signed a one-year contract with the Mets last week. "That's where I want to be in my career. . If I can make the team better and everyone else in the bullpen better, that's what I'm going to do." Lyon is saying all the right things right now, but he might eventually find himself in the closer role if Francisco continues to struggle.

It's a solid, low-risk move by the Mets, who could use some stability towards the back-end of their bullpen with the lack of confidence in Frank Francisco.
