Lester picked up his 16th win of the season on Friday against the Phillies as he only gave up one run on five hits over seven innings pitched, while striking out seven.

The 114-pitch effort lowered Lester's ERA to 2.41 on the season while he tries to help keep the Athletics playoff hopes alive. Aside from Ryan Howard's 410-foot home run, Lester didn't allow a base runner to reach third base. Lester runs his record to 16-10 on the year with the win.

Lester has more than done his job for the A's after they acquired him from the Red Sox prior to the trade deadline. He has posted a quality start in his first eight starts with the A's. Lester has a stellar 2.52 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 199:42 K:BB in 199.2 innings this year. His next start is scheduled for Sunday on the road against the Mariners.

Lester struck out five and did not walk a batter, while holding the Mariners to two runs on seven hits over eight innings in a losing effort Wednesday.

Felix Hernandez was simply better on the other side, limiting the Oakland offense to an Adam Dunn solo home run. All seven of Lester's starts with the A's have been quality outings, but he's been saddled with a loss in three of his last four turns. He'll seek wins No. 14 and 15 next week, first against the White Sox on Tuesday before a second start September 14 against the Mariners at Safeco Field.

Lester took the loss on Friday, but pitched well, allowing only two earned runs over six innings while striking out five.

The A's offense let Lester down as they were shut out and the defenses let him down too, making two errors that led to a run in the sixth inning. Lester has been strong since joining the A's, allowing three earned runs or fewer in all six starts. Lester will next take the mound on Wednesday at home against the Mariners.

Lester pitched well in his fifth start with the A's on Saturday, allowing one run while scattering five hits over seven innings in a no-decision against the Angels.

Lester also fanned seven while walking one and was nearly perfect until an RBI-single by Erick Aybar in the seventh tied the game 1-1. The 30-year-old owns a 2.93 ERA and a 6:25 BB:K in 27.2 innings with the A's since coming over from the Red Sox on July 31, and will be turned to for continued success on the hill as Oakland jostles with the Angels for the AL West lead down the stretch.

Lester fanned eight and walked two while allowing just three hits in a complete game shutout against the Twins on Thursday night.

Making only his second start for the A's since being acquired at the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, Lester had little difficulty with the Twins' lineup Thursday, while affording the A's relief corps a full day of rest heading into Game 2 of the four-game set.

Athletics acquired LHP Jon Lester and OF Jonny Gomes from the Red Sox for OF Yoenis Cespedes.

The A's were unsatisfied with their rotation even after acquiring Jeff Samardzija (and Jason Hammel) from the Cubs, so they got a little more creative and picked up the top ace on the trade market. Lester can become a free agent after the 2014 World Series and is highly doubtful to re-sign with Oakland, but he'll give the club a big boost down the stretch and into October. The 30-year-old left-hander was sporting a 2.52 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 149/32 K/BB ratio in 143 innings this season for Boston. Now he moves to the most pitcher-friendly park in MLB.

WEEI's Alex Speier reports that the A's have acquired left-hander Jon Lester and outfielder Jonny Gomes from the Red Sox for Yoenis Cespedes.

Without many elite-level prospects remaining in the wake of the Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel trade, the A's had to get creative to work out a deal for Lester. And this sure is creative. Cespedes has big-time power, a huge throwing arm, and is under contractual control through 2018, so it's a big piece to give up. Lester gets a massive fantasy boost with the move to pitcher-friendly Oakland.
