Jon Lester SP BOS 1 Day

Red Sox principal owner John Henry told the Boston Herald that extension talks with impending free agent Jon Lester have been tabled until after the 2014 season.

Lester doesn't want to be distracted any longer by in-season contract negotiations and probably wants a taste of the open market -- where there could be crazy money flying around this winter. The 30-year-old left-hander is putting together the best season of his career at the perfect time, boasting a 2.50 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 142/31 K/BB ratio in 137 innings. CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported earlier this month that the Red Sox were prepared to offer him "$100 million for five years, or thereabouts."

Jon Lester picked up his 10th win of the season after shutting out the Royals over eight innings on Sunday.

Lester was, once again, phenomenal. The lefty limited the Royals to four hits and two walks while striking out eight. He has now allowed one earned run or fewer in seven out of his last nine outings. Lester's ERA is down to 2.50 with a 1.12 WHIP and a 142/29 K/BB ratio in 137 innings. He'll look to continue the success when he takes on the Rays in Tampa on Friday.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Red Sox were prepared to up their extension offer to Jon Lester to "$100 million for five years, or thereabouts" before Lester halted negotiations.

The Red Sox' first offer -- which came during spring training -- was for four years and in the $70 million range, which Lester quickly rejected. The left-hander told Heyman that he was "thrown off" but the club wanting to rekindle negotiations in-season, so Lester decided to officially table them until the offseason. Lester has done nothing but increase his stock this season, posting a 2.65 ERA and 134/29 K/BB ratio over 129 first-half innings.

Jon Lester fanned 12 while allowing one run in seven innings Thursday against the White Sox.

Lester left with a two-run lead, but that was blown by Koji Uehara in the ninth. It was Lester's third game with at least 12 strikeouts this season (only David Price has as many), and he has a 1.01 ERA over his last six starts.

Jon Lester was outstanding in a no-decision against the Orioles on Saturday, allowing just a pair of unearned runs on five hits over eight strong innings.

Lester punched out seven on the afternoon without issuing a walk. It's the second consecutive outing that he's gone eight innings and hasn't allowed an earned run. The only damage against him came in the third inning where a pair of runs scored on an error by Xander Bogaerts. He'll bring a 2.73 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 122/29 K/BB ratio into Thursday's matchup against the White Sox.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Red Sox and Jon Lester have tabled in-season contract extension talks.

Both sides are still interested in a long-term deal, but Lester prefers to focus on pitching this season and put off contract talks. The left-hander understandably rejected a reported extension offer worth around $80 million this spring. The Red Sox will surely have to come up to $100 million or more to get something done.

Friday's game between the Orioles and Red Sox has been postponed due to inclement weather associated with Tropical Storm Arthur.

It will be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader Saturday. Scheduled starters Miguel Gonzalez and Jon Lester will be pushed back a day.

Jon Lester held the Yankees to one unearned run over eight innings Saturday to earn his ninth win.

Lester out-dueled Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka in the impressive outing. He allowed only five hits and two walks while fanning six Boston batters. Lester will carry a 9-7 record, 2.92 ERA, and 1.18 WHIP into his next outing at home against the Orioles. The 30-year-old left-hander will strike it rich if he makes it to open the market this fall. Or maybe the Red Sox will buck up before that happens.

Jon Lester held the A's to three runs -- two earned -- over 7 2/3 innings Sunday but settled for a no-decision.

Koji Uehara sustained a rare blown save to deny Lester of his ninth win, but it was still a strong start for the southpaw. Lester allowed four hits and two walks while striking out four. He owns a 3.14 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 109/27 K/BB ratio over 106 innings this year, and he'll look for that ninth win Saturday at the Yankees.

Jon Lester allowed one run on four hits over 6 1/3 innings in a win over the Twins on Tuesday.

Hughes kept the Twins off the scoreboard until the sixth inning, when a Joe Mauer double cut the lead to 2-1. The Red Sox won by the same score, moving Lester to 8-7. The southpaw struck out six and walked one in the outing. Lester will take a 3.20 ERA and 1.24 WHIP into a matchup with the Athletics on Sunday.
