Josh Johnson will have his right elbow examined by Dr. James Andrews next week.

Well, that's never a good sign. Johnson began the season on the DL with a strained flexor muscle, and he's yet to show any notable improvement. Padres general manager Josh Byrnes admitted Tuesday that he's "not sure" whether the right-hander will pitch this season. More will obviously be known after his exam next week.

It's a huge blow to the Padres, who were counting on Johnson as a productive member of the starting rotation. Johnson had surgery in October to remove bone spurs from his right elbow, so it's unclear if this injury is related to his previous issues. Robbie Erlin may step into Johnson's rotation spot to start the year.

Josh Johnson (elbow) will be brought along slowly this spring to keep him healthy, Corey Brock of MLB.com reports.

Johnson had surgery in October to remove bone spurs from his pitching elbow, but he's already thrown three bullpen sessions this spring and he hopes to throw two more before pitchers and catchers report on February 13. Johnson signed with the Padres in November, and the team is counting on him to be a valuable member of the rotation this season. Assuming health and with his horrendous 2013 behind him, Johnson is a nice bounce-back candidate this year.
