Kevin Gausman SP BAL 2 Days

Gausman appears headed to the bullpen to begin the season, MASN Sports reports.

It is difficult to gauge Gausman because he has thrown just four innings in the Grapefruit League after allowing two runs Thursday. He has thrown several more times in minor league camp. The Orioles want to control his innings, and beginning the season in the bullpen is one way to do that. He could replace any starter for injury or non-performance and there is a good chance he finds a way to get starts as the season progresses. It is important to note there is not final word on the rotation, but for now all signs point toward the bullpen for Gausman.

Gausman has thrown just three innings in the Grapefruit League this spring, but he has thrown in several minor league games and remains a candidate for the fifth spot in the rotation, MASN Sports.

The Orioles have given Gausman innings in the minors, but Ubaldo Jimenez has gotten 16 innings in Grapefruit League games through Tuesday. Gausman last threw Friday, so he should be making another appearance in the next day or two and it could come in the Grapefruit League.

Gausman threw a scoreless inning, allowing one hit and striking out one in Wednesday's spring training game against the Tigers. Meanwhile, the Orioles said they instructed Gausman not to throw bullpen sessions in the offseason, according to MASN Sports. "First time a guy pitches into October in his life," manager Buck Showalter said. "Just taking a lot precautions with a lot of guys, not just Gausman, to kind of save our bullets as much as possible."

The Orioles took it easy on Gausman in the offseason, which is why he did not go two innings. Ubaldo Jimenez imploded one day earlier, but it is way to early to decry one of the rotation spots as belonging to Gausman. It is very possible that Gausman will see an innings limit this season, probably short of 200 innings pitched considering he has not thrown 160 innings in a season in his professional career.

Gausman should be on a limit of around 180 innings in 2015, according to MASN Sports.

Gausman totaled 158.2 innings in 2014 while pitching between the Orioles and Triple-A. He closed the season by striking out 29 in 31.1 innings in September. As long as Gausman has a good spring, the Orioles are expected to have him in the rotation at the beginning of the season.

Gausman should be considered an "impact pitcher" in 2015, former baseball executive Jim Duquette told MASN Sports.

Normally, such statements are purely speculative, but we can assume Jim Duquette has knowledge of Baltimore's plans given he is the cousin of Orioles' Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Dan Duquette. The Orioles have options remaining on Gausman, but as long as he can hold his own in spring training it is probably time to take off the training wheels and give Gausman a shot to hold down a rotation spot.

Gausman might start Game 7 of the ALCS, if necessary, after the fallout from Monday's rainout, MASN Sports reports.

Gausman saw action in Game 1 as Chris Tillman made an early exit. The Orioles have options, including squeezing two more starts in the series out of Tillman. It could come down to whether Gausman is needed in long relief again in the series prior to a potential Game 7.

Gausman will work out of the bullpen in the ALDS, Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun reports.

The O's have yet to confirm their rotation beyond Chris Tillman, but it will presumably be Wei-Yin Chen, Bud Norris and Miguel Gonzalez in Games 2, 3, and 4, respectively, with Gausman ticketed for relief duty. The 23-year-old Gausman turned in arguably his best month of the season in September, posting a 2.87 ERA with a 29:9 K:BB over 31.1 innings, but he said he expected to work out of the bullpen in the ALDS with the other starters pitching well at the moment.

Gausman allowed two runs and three hits in five innings at Yankee Stadium on Thursday, but did not factor in the decision.

Gausman was solid in a tough venue, but he wasn't too efficient, needing 97 pitches to record 15 outs. The young right-hander finishes the 2014 season with a 7-7 record and respectable 3.57 ERA in 108.1 innings. He's likely to pitch out of the bullpen for Baltimore in the ALDS.

Gausman tossed five innings versus the Red Sox on Friday night, giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits while notching three strikeouts.

Coming off of likely the best performance of his young career, which saw him put together seven scoreless frames versus the Yankees exactly one week ago, Gausman was not quite at the same level Friday night. Nevertheless, the 23-year-old hurler continues to log solid innings for the Orioles this month, as he now sports a 2.73 ERA and 8.2 K/9 across four starts.

Gausman tossed seven scoreless innings in the first game of Friday's day-night doubleheader versus the Yankees, allowing seven hits and two walks while piling up seven strikeouts.

Gausman was brilliant Friday afternoon, putting together possibly the strongest effort of his young MLB career. The 23-year-old hurler has been impressive in recent weeks, posting a 2.97 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 8.4 K/9 across his past six turns in the Orioles' rotation. Gausman is slated to make his next start Wednesday versus the Blue Jays.
