Holland (knee) needed 42 pitches to retire just three batters in his second rehab start at Triple-A Round Rock on Monday.

Holland was scheduled to throw 50 pitches over three innings, but his first-inning struggles put an early end to his evening. He's expected to make another rehab start this weekend.

Derek Holland threw 33 pitches over two scoreless innings in his first rehab start with Double-A Frisco on Wednesday.

Holland didn't allow a hit over his two innings, walking two while striking out four. His next start will come Monday with Triple-A Round Rock. Holland will continue to build up his endurance and his pitch count with an eye on a late August return.

Derek Holland (knee) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Frisco on Wednesday if he gets through a bullpen session Monday with no issues.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels admitted that the Rangers considered before the second half began shutting Holland down for the season, but they obviously decided against it. The lefty has been out all year following left knee surgery. He should rejoin the rotation in late August if all goes well. "You start thinking about what's most important," Daniels said. "With that being said, he has worked out so hard to come back. I think there is some benefit to him from a mental standpoint to see the light at the end of the tunnel."

Derek Holland (knee) isn't expected to rejoin the Rangers' rotation until late August or early September.

Holland hasn't been shy about saying that he thinks he's ready to return now, but the Rangers are proceeding extra cautiously with the left-hander. He's been sent to the team's spring training facility and will throw three more live batting practice sessions before being re-evaluated. It's possible he'll begin a rehab assignment after that. "That is the way we planned it right now," pitching coach Mike Maddux said. "When you put stuff on paper, you're conservative. If he accelerates it, that's good. But we don't want to do too much too soon and have a setback. There is a difference between throwing on the side and throwing in game conditions. You can't simulate game conditions."

Derek Holland (knee) said Thursday that he hasn't been told when he'll begin a rehab assignment.

It was reported Wednesday that he would begin one after the All-Star break. That may very well happen, but the left-hander doesn't know for sure yet. "I haven't heard anything, but the only thing I don't want happen is I'm out there for just two innings and 35 pitches," Holland said. "That better not happen. I have been throwing 80-pitch bullpens." The Rangers are expected to put Holland through more fielding drills over the weekend in order to test his surgically-repaired knee. If that goes well, he seems likely to be cleared to pitch in games.

Holland will throw live batting practice over the weekend, and he's tentatively scheduled to make his first rehab start for Triple-A Round Rock on July 23. From there he'll build stamina much like a pitcher just beginning spring training, meaning he won't be back with the Rangers until sometime in August.

Holland tossed 67 pitches to prove he is ready for a rehab assignment. But, the Rangers will wait until July 7 to make any further decisions on the next step for him. "Obviously it's up to them what they decide," said Holland Saturday. "I've got to respect their decision and go from there." He's been out all season due to microfracture knee surgery.

If all goes well, he should be cleared to begin a rehab assignment next week. Holland threw a 75-pitch live batting practice session on Monday, so he shouldn't need too much time to build his stamina up. He could rejoin the Rangers' rotation around the All-Star break.

Derek Holland (knee) will go through another extensive fielding practice this week before being cleared to begin a rehab assignment.

Holland said he was "ready to go" after a 75-pitch live batting practice session on Monday, but the Rangers want him to test out his surgically-repaired knee with some more fielding drills. "We just want to see where his progress is and then we'll decide after that," manager Ron Washington said. Holland should rejoin the Rangers' rotation sometime next month.

The workout went well, and Holland is now hoping to begin a minor league rehab assignment. He should be ready to join the Rangers' starting rotation soon after the All-Star beak. The left-hander underwent microfracture surgery on his left knee in January.
