He's a career .249/.332/.430 hitter with 137 home runs over 12 major league seasons.

The move clears the way for Eric Chavez's return from the disabled list. Hinske, 35, has functioned primarily as a pinch-hitter this season and has just nine hits in 52 at-bats. He should draw interest elsewhere.

Eric Hinske was ejected from Friday's game against the Cardinals after arguing a called third strike.
Hinske, who was pinch-hitting in the seventh, tried to hold up on a two-strike pitch by right-hander Mitchell Boggs, but home plate umpire Mike Muchlinski ruled that he went around. Hinske objected to the call and Muchlinski naturally didn't take kindly to such actions.
