Chen had his contract option exercised by the Orioles on Thursday, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.

Chen had his best season with the Orioles since coming over from Japan in 2104, posting a 3.54 ERA and 1.23 WHIP over 185.67 innings of work on his way to a 16-6 record on the season.

Chen will start Game 3 of the ALCS on Tuesday, CSN Mid-Atlantic's Rich Dubroff reports.

Game 3 was postponed Monday and will instead be played on Tuesday, however the O's will still start Chen. Chris Tillman may now be called upon to pitch Game 4 as he would be able to do so on regular rest.

It's possible plans could change, if Bud Norris is driven from Saturday's Game 2 early and Chen is forced to pitch in long relief, but the lefty is currently penciled in to toe the rubber Monday. Chen failed to make it out of the fourth inning in Game 2 of the ALDS, but the Orioles rallied against the Tigers' bullpen to earn the victory.

Manager Buck Showalter had been mum as to his starters beyond Chris Tillman in Game 1, but it will be Chen who opposes Justin Verlander in Game 2. Chen posted a 2.05 ERA over five September starts (30.2 innings) to finish the regular season with a 3.54 ERA and 1.23 WHIP.

Chen is having a great season overall as his record stands at 16-5 even after Monday's loss. There is a chance that he might not start again during the regular season depending on what the Orioles decide to do with their postseason rotation.

Chen won Monday against the Blue Jays he pitched 5.2 innings and allowed two runs, nine hits and one walk to go along with six strikeouts.

Although Chen wasn't at his best Monday, he battled for his 16th win of the season and allowed two runs or less for the fourth time in his last five starts. He has been a big reason why the Orioles have run away with their division this season.

Chen (15-4) tossed seven innings of one-run ball in a win over the Red Sox on Wednesday, allowing just three hits with four strikeouts against no walks.

The lone blemish against Chen came on a solo homer from Xander Bogaerts in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the victory, Chen has now won eight of his last nine decision to put him just one off of the AL lead. As things line up, Chen will make two home starts next week, Monday against the Blue Jays and Sept. 21 against the Red Sox.

Chen worked six scoreless innings Friday night against Rays, surrendering just four hits and three walks while striking out three.

Though the Orioles' bullpen squandered the effort, Chen came up with another solid performance Friday night. The 29-year-old lefty has been a steady presence in the Baltimore rotation this season, especially during the last few weeks. Dating back to July 24, a span of eight starts, he has gone 4-1 while posting a 2.60 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 40:12 K:BB ratio across 52 innings. Chen is next scheduled to take the mound Wednesday in Boston.

Chen allowed eight hits and four earned runs while striking out seven in 6.2 innings against Minnesota on Sunday.

Chen showed good control throughout, tossing 78 of his 104 pitches for strikes while not allowing a walk in the winning decision. The left-hander, who owns a 3.83 ERA and 1.25 WHIP this season, will next be in action on Friday in Tampa Bay.
