Kawasaki is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Rays, Barry Davis of Sportsnet reports.

Kawasaki has been holding down regular duty at either second or third base mostly since the All-Star break, but aside from a .271 average on the season, he's been mostly a non-entity in the fantasy game. He could share duties at either position with Steve Tolleson, Ryan Goins and Danny Valencia the rest of the way, with the Blue Jays likely content to ride the hot bats.

Early indications were that the 32-year-old Kawasaki would return to Japan over the winter, but he's back with the Jays on a minor league deal and trying to put himself into the mix at second base. Ryan Goins and Maicer Izturis are ahead of him right now.

There was a report in November that Kawasaki was expected to accept a $2 million contract to return to Japan, but the deal never came together. A fan and clubhouse favorite, the 32-year-old hit .229/.326/.308 with one home run, 24 RBI and seven stolen bases over 289 plate appearances this past season. He'll compete for a backup infielder job in the spring.

Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star reports that Munenori Kawasaki is expected to return to Japan on a $2 million contract.

It comes after the Blue Jays officially declined Kawasaki's $1 million option for 2014, though Griffin notes that they were aware of his intentions to return to his native country. Kawasaki has a career .218/.306/.276 batting line across 157 major league games.

Kawasaki left the team on Friday to be present for the birth of his first child. The 32-year-old is batting .205/.309/.286 over 223 plate appearances this this season.
