Starling Marte went 5-for-6 with a homer and four RBI as the Pirates crushed the Blue Jays 22-5 on Tuesday.

He can ask for a bit more in extension talks now. Marte is batting .356 with two homers and three steals in 45 at-bats this spring. He'll offer some pop and probably around 40 steals this season, making him one of the NL's top 10 fantasy outfielders.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the extension offer Starling Marte turned down from the Pirates was for six years.

It would have been added on to the $512,600 he'll make this season, so the Pirates would have bought out the outfielder's first two years of free agency. Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported over the weekend that Marte has turned down at least two extension offers from the club. It's not clear if the two sides are still in negotiations.

The Pirates have attempted to sign Starling Marte to a multiyear contract extension, according to Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Biertempfel said the outfielder turned down at least two offers from the team over the offseason. Despite their inability to strike a deal, Marte and the Bucs remain open to the idea. And considering the 25-year-old won't even be arbitration-eligible until 2016, so he and the team have time to work something out. Marte batted .280 with 41 stolen bases and 83 runs scored last season.

Starling Marte will bat leadoff in Tuesday's Wild Card game against the Reds.

No real surprises with Clint Hurdle's lineup. Marte will be followed by Neil Walker, Andrew McCutchen, Justin Morneau, Marlon Byrd, Pedro Alvarez, Russell Martin, Clint Barmes, and Francisco Liriano. Johnny Cueto is on the hill for Cincinnati.

Starling Marte went 2-for-4 with three steals against the Cubs in Wednesday's loss.

The three steals give him 40 for the season, which puts him third behind Jean Segura (44) and Eric Young Jr. (42) for the NL lead. Also impressive is that he's been caught just seven times; he has easily the best success rate of any National Leaguer with at least 25 steals.

In his lone at-bat, Starling Marte homered in the top of the ninth Monday to lead the Pirates past the Cubs 2-1.

The win combined with the Nationals' loss means the Pirates are going to the postseason. Marte was again left out of the starting lineup because of his hand injury; he hasn't started since last Wednesday. The well-timed homer was his first since Aug. 17 and just his second since July 19.

Starling Marte could be available off the bench Friday.

Marte missed Thursday's game after his wife went into labor. He's not in the lineup Friday after pulling an all-nighter, but he could make a pinch-hit appearance at some point.

Starling Marte remained out of the Pirates' lineup Friday.

Marte's wife went into labor on Thursday, so he's presumably still away from the club. He should return Saturday for the second game of the all-important series against the Reds. Jose Tabata is in left field and leading off Friday.

Starling Marte's wife went into labor on Thursday morning and he is out of Thursday's lineup.

Marte should be back in action (as a new father) for Friday's big series-opener against the Reds. The 24-year-old is batting .280/.342/.439 with 11 home runs and 36 stolen bases in 127 games this season for the Bucs.
