He'll take the roster spot of Jose Contreras, who was placed on the bereavement list. Hughes has a 4.61 ERA and 13/9 K/BB ratio over 13 2/3 innings with the Pirates this season and will operate in middle relief.

Hughes struck out 13 over 13 2/3 frames for the Bucs, but he also walked nine and posted a 4.61 ERA. He was a quality relief option for the Pirates last season, though, and should get another chance later this summer.

Jared Hughes said through the Pirates on Wednesday that he "did not make any comment with a racial undertone or connotation" to Brandon Phillips during Monday's game.

Hughes hit Phillips with a pitch, after which the two players exchanged words. Phillips alleged on his Twitter account after the game that something racist was said to him by an unnamed Pirates player. According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Phillips believed he heard Hughes call him "boy." Andrew McCutchen arranged a phone call on Tuesday for Hughes and Phillips to work out their differences, but Hughes has maintained that he never said anything racially insensitive to Phillips.

Hughes tossed a scoreless inning in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader. It was his second stint with the big club, and he'll likely get another shot at some point.

Pirates recalled RHP Jared Hughes from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Per MLB's new collective bargaining agreement, teams are allowed to have a 26th player on the active roster for traditional doubleheaders. Hughes will be that man for the Pirates on Wednesday. The 26-year-old right-hander had a 2.08 ERA and 4/4 K/BB ratio over 8 2/3 innings before being sent down when A.J. Burnett was activated from the disabled list Saturday.

This move was made to make room on the active roster for A.J. Burnett who's scheduled to start on Saturday. Hughes had been serving as the long man in the Pirates bullpen, and will likely be back in that role at some point this season.

Pirates purchased the contract of RHP Jared Hughes from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Hughes, 26, posted a 3.28 ERA and 78/36 K/BB ratio in 104 1/3 innings this season between Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indy. He'll act as a long reliever for the Bucs.
