Darin Ruf 1B/LF.. PHI 7 Days

The Phillies are hopeful that Darin Ruf (oblique) will begin baseball activities early next week.

Ruf landed on the disabled list after suffering a strained left oblique toward the end of spring training. He was originally expected to miss 4-6 weeks, so he could be an option for the Phillies around the end of the month.

Phillies placed 1B/OF Darin Ruf on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique.

Ruf suffered the injury a week ago. He was given a 4-6 week timetable to return at the time, so the Phillies figure to be without his services for at least the first month of the season.

Darin Ruf will be sidelined for 4-6 weeks after being diagnosed with a Grade 1/2 left oblique strain.

Ruf is slated to see plenty of playing time in the outfield and at first base for the Phillies, but he'll now have to wait until sometime in May to make his season debut. The 27-year-old's absence will create an opportunity for a non-roster invitee like Bobby Abreu or Tony Gwynn to make the team.

Darin Ruf (oblique) will undergo an MRI Friday.

Ruf has felt some discomfort in his left oblique for the last week and aggravated the ailment Thursday. The 27-year-old admits that he feels pain when he laughs, coughs or sneezes, so a stint on the disabled list to start the season is looking likely.

Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer believes Darin Ruf could be in for an expanded role this season.

"I like him at first base depending on how things go," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "If we need a righthanded bat against lefthanded pitching, we have the lineup for that. That could be Ruf in left field. He could be at first base." Ruf is no stranger to playing different positions, playing 251 innings at first base and 367 1/3 innings in the outfield last season. After posting an .806 OPS in 251 at-bats, the club would like to find ways to get his bat into the lineup. Still, even with a larger role Ruf is a bench player and represents nothing more than an NL-only option barring injury.

Darin Ruf delivered a two-run double, drew a walk, and scored a run Friday against the Mets.

Ruf has been surprisingly productive this season, batting .254/.355/.487 with 14 home runs and 28 RBI over 65 games. The Phillies are unlikely to trust him in the outfield next season, but he could be a platoon partner for Ryan Howard against left-handed starters at the very least.

Darin Ruf cranked a solo homer, his 12th long-ball of the season, in Sunday's loss to the Cubs.

Ruf finished 1-for-3 with a walk. The 27-year-old Nebraskan has displayed prodigious power in his brief stint with the Phils this year, slashing .256/.348/.512 in 49 games. He's bereft of speed and the average isn't likely to crack .265, but NL-only owners sure appreciate the cheap source of muscle.

Darin Ruf blasted his 10th home run of the season, and the Phillies came from behind to top the Diamondbacks 4-3 on Friday.

Ruf's blast was a solo shot to dead center off Wade Miley to get the Phillies on the board in the second inning. A two-run double from Carlos Ruiz would tie the game in the sixth, and they would win on a walkoff walk by Chase Utley. Ruf has shown extremely impressive power in his brief stint with the club, hitting .275/.371/.543 with 10 homers and 16 RBI in his first 40 games.

Darin Ruf hit his ninth homer Thursday to help the Phillies beat the Rockies 5-4.

Ruf's homer came off Matt Belisle in the eighth, bringing the Phillies to within 5-4. They went on to win in the ninth after Michael Young tied it with a single and Domonic Brown ended it with another. Ruf's nine homers have come in just 134 at-bats, but he has a modest .269 average, 15 RBI and no steals to go along with the bombs. He probably won't last as a mixed-league contributor in September.
