Gallardo lasted only 3.2 innings Monday in a loss to the Marlins while coughing up six runs (five earned) on nine hits with two walks and three home runs.

Gallardo falls to 8-9 on the season after back-to-back stinkers. The veteran right-hander has allowed 10 runs over 8.2 innings (10.38 ERA) so far in September. He will pitch at home versus Cincinnati on Saturday unless the Brewers keep Jimmy Nelson in a six-man rotation in which case Gallardo would throw Sunday.

It was an uncharacteristically horrible outing for Gallardo at the worst possible time for the Brewers, who have now lost seven straight. The five earned runs Gallard surrendered Tuesday equaled the total he had given up in his previous four starts combined, so there's reason to believe he'll offer a better performance his next time out, Monday at home against the Marlins.

Gallardo came into the game four strikeouts shy of Ben Sheets' franchise record of 1,202, but didn't fan a single batter for the first time in is big league career. The right-hander wasn't very economical with his pitches, needing 109 to get through six innings and throwing only 65 for strikes. Gallardo ends August with a 2-2 record, 2.70 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 17:11 K:BB ratio over 30 innings for the month. He faces the Cubs on the road Tuesday.

The good news is that only half of the runs he allowed were earned, but it was still a disappointing home start for Gallardo, who threw 99 pitches to record 15 outs prior to his departure. He'll get a favorable road matchup in San Diego on Wednesday for his next scheduled start.

He outpitched Clayton Kershaw at Dodger Stadium, and displayed good fastball command throughout Saturday's start. As a result, Gallardo was very pitch efficient, needing just 96 pitches to record 24 outs prior to turning the game over to closer Francisco Rodriguez.

Gallardo gave up just three singles, walked one and struck out five. Though he's dealt with his bouts of inconsistency, the right-hander has tossed 14 2/3 scoreless innings over his last two outings. He'll take a nifty 3.38 ERA into a home start against the Giants next week.

Tough break for Gallardo, who was dominant. He allowed just four hits (all of them singles) and no walks while fanning eight batters. However, Francisco Rodriguez blew his chance at a win in the ninth. Gallardo is now winless over his last six starts. He'll try to turn that around when he faces the red-hot Rays next week.

On the afternoon, the right-hander yielded eight hits -- including a home run to Ryan Zimmerman -- while walking two and striking out six. Gallardo now carries a 3.79 ERA, a 1.26 WHIP, and a 92/34 K/BB ratio. He'll try to bounce back when he takes on the Mets at home on Friday.
