Ortiz cleared waivers and will report to Triple-A Iowa, ESPN Chicago's Jesse Rogers reports. He was designated for assignment recently and made it through the waiver process, thus remaining as organizational bullpen dept for the Cubs.

Ortiz was designated for assignment by the Cubs on Sunday, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports. Ortiz was off to a decent start with Triple-A Iowa this season to the tune of a 3.38 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over 10.2 innings, but the Cubs determined that Anthony Varvaro -- who was claimed off waivers from the Red Sox -- was more deserving of a spot on the 40-man roster. The 24-year-old left-hander doesn't figure to attract much interest on the opening market, so it's possible he could remain with the organization if he passes through waivers unclaimed.

Ortiz was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports. The 24-year-old lefty put together an outstanding camp, giving up just one run on six hits and one walk with eight strikeouts in 8.1 Cactus League innings, but it appears it wasn't quite enough to earn an Opening Day bullpen spot. That said, Ortiz will likely be on the short list of candidates to come up when the team need some specialist help or merely a fresh arm.

Ortiz threw a scoreless inning against the White Sox on Friday, his fourth straight scoreless appearance in Cactus League action. Ortiz has given up six runs - five of them unearned - in 7.1 innings this spring. Given how poorly Felix Doubront has pitched, as well as the lack of good options, Ortiz could be the top lefty in the Cubs' bullpen this year

Ortiz was claimed off waivers on Monday by the Cubs. He was outrighted to Triple-A by the Rangers, but the Cubs deemed the lefty worthy of a spot on their 40-man roster. He posted a 4.23 ERA in 32 relief appearances for the Rangers in 2014.

Rangers placed LHP Joseph Ortiz on the 60-day disabled list with a fractured left foot. The move was made in order to clear space on the 40-man roster for Tommy Hanson. Ortiz had surgery last month after suffering the injury when he was clipped by a motorcycle. He'll miss most of the first couple months of the season.
