The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the newly-acquired John McDonald. D'Arnaud had left thumb surgery on Tuesday and will likely be sidelined until sometime in May.

D'Arnaud suffered a partially torn ligament in his thumb during a pregame baserunning drill earlier this month. The 25-year-old was in the mix as a bench player this spring, but now he'll be sidelined until sometime in May.

The 25-year-old will provide infield depth for the Pirates down the stretch. He batted .252/.325/.383 with six homers and 38 RBI in 98 games this season at Triple-A.
