The Boston Globe reports Stephen Drew (concussion) is close to being cleared for minor league games.

Drew has been taking batting practice and continues to move in the right direction. If all goes well, he could be ready to return sometime around mid April. The Red Sox have already placed Drew on the 7-day disabled list to open the season.

An expected move, as Drew is still feeling some minor symptoms related to his concussion from earlier this month. Jose Iglesias will begin the season as the starting shortstop.

Stephen Drew is likely to open the 2013 regular season on the 7-day concussion disabled list.

Drew has resumed some baseball activities, but he's not fully where he needs to be and Opening Day is Monday. The 30-year-old shortstop suffered a concussion on March 7 when he was beaned by a pitch during a Grapefruit League game. He signed a one-year, $9.5 million free agent contract with the Red Sox this offseason.

Stephen Drew (concussion) is scheduled to take batting practice on the field Wednesday.

Drew is doing everything but playing in games at this point, but he's experiencing some minor symptoms related to his concussion earlier this month. According to Red Sox manager John Farrell, usually they occur at night following a full day of activity. Drew is expected to travel with the team to New York for the start of the season, but he's almost certainly headed for the disabled list. Jose Iglesias will handle shortstop duties during his absence.

It comes a day after he resumed taking batting practice. Drew said Friday that he's still dealing with "slight fogginess," but obviously he's made some progress over the last 48 hours. However, he's still a good bet to begin the season on the DL. Jose Iglesias will handle shortstop while Drew is out.
