Matt Adams 1B STL 11 Hrs

Matt Adams is not in the Cardinals' lineup Friday.

He's getting a breather against tough lefty Gio Gonzalez. Allen Craig is playing first base, with Shane Robinson handling right field. Kolten Wong is also sitting out, as Mark Ellis is at second base.

Matt Adams went 1-for-4 with three RBI in Thursday's win over the Nationals.

Adams plated a run with a groundout in the first and then added a two-RBI single in the sixth. Though his batting line dropped to .355/.385/.500 for the season, the big man more than doubled his RBI total, as he only had pair entering the game. Adams has a hit in 11 of his 15 games so far.

Matt Adams clubbed his first home run of the season in Saturday's win over the Cubs.

It was a solo shot. Adams hasn't had much luck with runners in scoring position so far this season, hence his two RBI, but he's hitting .357 (15-for-42) through 11 games. Primarily hitting fourth or sixth in the Cardinals' lineup, the RBI should start to pile up soon.

Matt Adams homered and doubled off Astros left-hander Brett Oberholtzer on Saturday.

The Cardinals have the option of returning Allen Craig to first base against left-handers, but Adams would surely prefer not to platoon. He's 6-for-17 versus southpaws this spring. At least until Oscar Taveras shows he's ready, Adams could start against most lefties.

Matt Adams homered and singled Wednesday in the Cardinals' 3-1 win over the Twins.

That's the good news. The bad is that he hit seventh today, with Kolten Wong occupying the second spot in the lineup. Wong does look like he could be a strong option up there, but the problem is that the guy who did seem likely to hit second, Jhonny Peralta, would be slotted ahead of Adams if he hits lower in the lineup, whereas Wong would hit behind Adams. If Adams really opens the season batting seventh, it'd cut into his run and RBI potential.

Matt Adams homered off Steve Cishek and singled in a run Friday versus the Marlins.

Adams doesn't have to win a starting job this spring, but it doesn't look like he's leaving anything to chance; he's off to a 6-for-13 start with five RBI in five games.

Matt Adams said Sunday that he's dropped 6-7 pounds this offseason.

Adams was speaking to reporters at the team's annual Winter Warm-Up, also saying that he's worked on adding muscle and hitting sliders from left-handers this winter. The hulking 25-year-old hit a promising .284/.335/.503 with 17 homers over 319 plate appearances in his first extended action at the big league level last season. Adams is slated to take over as the everyday first baseman for the Cards in 2014 and has big-time power potential.

Matt Adams is starting at first base and batting fourth for the Cardinals in Game 3 of the World Series.

It is as expected -- Allen Craig starting was a remote possibility to start at first base but not a likelihood, especially on Saturday. Craig may return to the field later this series. The complete lineup is Matt Carpenter, Carlos Beltran, Matt Holliday, Adams, Yadier Molina, David Freese, Jon Jay, Pete Kozma and starting pitcher Joe Kelly.

Matt Adams is batting cleanup in Game 2 of the World Series Thursday.

Allen Craig has been moved down to the No. 6 spot with right-hander John Lackey on the hill for the Red Sox, and Yadier Molina is sandwiched between the two. Craig had a single in four at-bats in Game 1, while Adams went hitless in his four trips to the plate.

Matt Adams homered and doubled Wednesday in the win over the Nationals.

With Allen Craig out, Adams is hitting .325 with eight homers and 15 RBI this month. The Cardinals would certainly prefer to get Craig back for the postseason, but it looks like they're OK at first base if he can't go.
