Schafer was scratched from the lineup for Saturday's game against the Cardinals.

Schafer was set to start in place of the injured Ryan Braun (thumb), but Braun was added to the lineup after going through batting practice, and Schafer will instead open on the bench Saturday night.

Schafer was recalled from Triple-A Nashville on Monday, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

With the Brewers acquiring an upgrade in Gerardo Parra at the deadline, Schafer was sent to Nashville for the entirety of August, but he'll return Monday to occupy a spot on the team's expanded September roster. In 53 games with Milwaukee this season, Schafer has hit just .183/.267/.288, so his opportunities figure to remain limited over the final few weeks.

Schafer had been hitless in five at-bats since returning from the disabled list before his two-run double in the first inning. Schafer also singled later in the game. With Ryan Braun still on the disabled list for a few more days, Schafer could see a few more starts in right field in the coming days.

Schafer felt a pop in his hamstring while stretching prior to a pinch-hitting appearance on Thursday. "It's a lot better (Saturday) than it was (Friday)," Schafer said. "I've never had any problems with my hammy or anything. It was a little weird. I'm just getting treatment and staying on top of it." Schafer is hoping to be available Sunday, but if he's not it's possible the Brewers will put him on the disabled list when they bring back Lyle Overbay from paternity leave.

Schafer finishes spring batting .379 with eight RBI. The 27-year-old also stole five bases on the spring. He'll be the Brewers' fourth outfielder this year.
