Cruz is out of the lineup Friday against the Blue Jays, Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com reports.

A loss to the Yankees on Thursday took the Orioles out of contention for the top record in the AL, so manager Buck Showalter will go ahead and give many of his regulars another rest day Friday. Cruz turned in a four-hit effort Wednesday, his second of the month, and is now sitting with a .273/.336/.527 batting line and 40 homers for the season.

Cruz went 3-for-5 and swatted his 40th home run of the season in Tuesday's win over the Yankees.

Cruz went from signing a contract late in February to likely finishing the week as MLB's home run leader while going north of 100 RBI as well. There was fear that his PED use might reflect in his 2014 numbers, but Cruz actually improved after leaving the Rangers. It will probably take multiple years and much more than $8 million to sign Cruz this off-season.

Cruz had a massive game Sunday against the Rays, going 4-for-5 with two homers while driving in all seven of the Orioles' runs in the team's 11-inning victory.

The pair of home runs boost Cruz's league-leading total to 39, with his two-run shot in the top of the 11th proving to be the difference maker. Though Cruz's batting average has been on a steady decline from its peak mark of .319 in early June, his ability to stay healthy this season has allowed him to churn out the best power numbers of his career in his age-34 campaign. With Chris Davis noticing close to a 300-point downgrade in his OPS this season, the February signing of Cruz has looked like an especially shrewd move by the Orioles.

Cruz made his one hit count Monday, cracking a home run off of Glen Perkins in the Orioles' loss to the Twins.

Cruz's home run was his 36th of the yearthree more than Chris Carter and Jose Abreu in the AL and two better than Giancarlo Stanton in the NL. The veteran's batting average has been slipping for the past few months, but the power and RBI numbers should remain strong through the end of the season.
