Phillies released RHP Juan Cruz.

The Phillies signed Cruz to a minor league deal in January, but he reportedly asked out of the contract after the club recently added Chad Durbin. The 34-year-old right-hander had a 2.78 ERA and 33/19 K/BB ratio over 35 2/3 innings last season with the Pirates and should be able to latch on elsewhere.

Juan Cruz hasn't reported to Phillies' camp due to a miscommunication about his report date.

He'll presumably show up to camp within the next few days. Cruz signed a minor league deal with the Phillies over the winter after posting a 2.78 ERA and 33/19 K/BB ratio over 35 2/3 innings for the Pirates last season. He should be in the mix for a bullpen spot this spring.

Phillies signed RHP Juan Cruz to a minor league contract.

He'll receive an invitation to spring training. Cruz posted a 2.78 ERA, 1.63 WHIP and 33/19 K/BB ratio over 35 2/3 innings for the Pirates last season before they decided to cut him loose in August. The veteran reliever should have a decent shot at grabbing one of the final spots in the Phils' pen.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said the Pirates will release Juan Cruz if he clears waivers.

Cruz was designated for assignment Monday. "At this point, we've got some young guys who've passed him," Hurdle said. Cruz posted a 2.78 ERA in 43 appearances for the Pirates, so he should be able to catch on somewhere.

Pirates designated RHP Juan Cruz for assignment.

Cruz gets the boot after blowing a save during an eventual 19-inning win against the Cardinals on Sunday. The veteran right-hander has a 2.78 ERA in 43 appearances this season, but he has also walked 19 batters in 35 2/3 innings. The Pirates evidently believe they can do better in their bullpen down the stretch.
