Jhonatan Solano C MIA 16 Days

Solano signed a minor league contract with the Marlins on Monday that includes an invite to spring training, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

Solano did manage a career-high 10 homers in 93 games with Triple-A Syracuse last season, but he hit just .251/.305/.388 for the year, raising his overall batting line at the Triple-A level to .243/.289/.346. He'll get to spend spring training with his brother, Donovan, but Solano will face a difficult battle to earn a roster spot, with Austin Barnes, J.T. Realmuto and Jeff Mathis all ahead of him on the depth chart.

Solano was released by the Nationals on Tuesday, William Ladson of MLB.com reports.

With Solano out of options entering his age-29 season and not considered a fit for the organization, the Nationals went ahead and cut ties with the backstop. He spent the entire 2014 season at Triple-A Syracuse, posting an underwhelming .251/.305/.388 batting line in 39 games. Solano did have a career-high 10 homers, however, and may receive a spring training invite from another club.

Solano went 1-for-3 with a double on Friday in a rehab game with the Nationals' Gulf Coast League affiliate. The 27-year-old backstop has been sidelined since mid-July with an oblique strain. He could be an option to rejoin the Nats in September.
