Cubs signed RHP Andrew Carpenter to a minor league contract.

He's been given an invitation to spring training. Carpenter had a brief stint in the majors with the Blue Jays in 2012 and produced a 3.09 ERA and nice 72/21 K/BB ratio over 84 1/3 minor league innings.

Carpenter elected free agency earlier this week rather than accept a minor league assignment with the Blue Jays. The 27-year-old has allowed five runs over nine innings in the big leagues this season. He'll serve as organizational depth.
