Brenson was released by the Braves on Friday, Kevin McAlpin of Braves Radio Network reports. Benson missed the cut for the 25-man roster to begin the season, but hasn't been horrible at Triple-A Gwinnett, batting .246/.346/.331 over 41 games. However, he hasn't displayed enough to warrant a roster spot, and he'll now look for work elsewhere.

Benson has been reassigned to Atlanta's minor league camp, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. Since Benson is going down along with Todd Cunningham, it has to be assumed that Atlanta is making a move for a major league backup center fielder. Melvin Upton Jr. is nowhere near solid enough to justify rolling without a backup, so be on the lookout for moves there. If there isn't one, Benson or Cunningham could be called up later to fill in.

Benson has put himself in the running for a spot on the Braves' Opening Day roster, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. "He's in the mix," manager Fredi Gonzalez said Wednesday. "He hasn't done anything not to be in the mix. Played solid center field, you trust him out there, makes good routes." Upon signing a minor league deal with Atlanta, Benson was assigned to minor league camp, but he impressed the team's coaching staff so much when he was brought over to play a couple Grapefruit League games that the team just kept bringing him back. He was officially added to team's list of non-roster invitees Thursday, with just two days left in spring training. Benson hit an opposite-field homer off Cole Hamels on Wednesday, and it looks like either Benson or Todd Cunningham -- both of whom can play center -- will join Kelly Johnson as the team's backup outfielders.

Marlins signed OF Joe Benson to a minor league contract. The agreement includes an invitation to spring training. The 25-year-old hasn't been in the majors since a 21-game stint with the Twins in 2011. Benson was a top-100 prospect before 2011 and 2012 but has struggled to hit for average at the minor league level. He'll have a shot to win a bench job with the Marlins this spring.

Rangers designate OF Joe Benson for assignment. Benson was claimed off waivers from the Twins in late May, but has struggled at Double-A Frisco. Through 37 games, he hit .205/.293/.394 with five homers, 16 RBI and three stolen bases. He's still talented enough to where there should be another club willing to take a chance on him.

Twins optioned OF Joe Benson to Triple-A Rochester. Benson was competing for the center field job this spring but batted just .154/.267/.288 over 17 games. The gig is expected to go to Aaron Hicks. The twins also reassigned Luis Perdomo to minor league camp.

Joe Benson struck out four times in five plate appearances Thursday against the Red Sox. Aaron Hicks has already blown past Benson in the center-field battle, which would still be the case even if Benson were hitting .300 rather than .150. Benson's future is likely as a reserve anyway. Barring an injury ahead of him, he's destined for some more Triple-A time.
