Matt Carpenter 3B STL 1 Month

The Cardinals are considering moving Carpenter from the leadoff spot next season, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

GM John Mozeliak and manager Mike Matheny are looking at ways to upgrade an offense which finished ninth in the NL in runs scored in 2014 with 619, and moving Carpenter down to second or third in the batting order is one option being considered. While Carpenter has a .384 OBP and has scored more runs (225) than anyone in baseball over the past two seasons, he can also hit for extra bases and the team already has an in-house option in Jon Jay that could be a serviceable replacement atop the lineup. Jay led the team with a .303 average last season and was the leadoff man before Carpenter. Kolten Wong could eventually be an option to bat first, but he'll need to improve his on-base skills significantly before that becomes realistic.
