Carpenter is riding a seven-game hitting streak and has collected three hits in two of his last three. The veteran third sacker is getting on base as he usually does -- a .378 clip -- but isn't squeezing enough juice out of his swings, with a drop in gap power this year. His slugging percentage is .389, down from a career .448 mark, and Carpenter is on pace for 36 doubles and eight homers, down from 55 doubles and 11 long flies last season.

Carpenter tallied half of the team's six total hits as they were blanked by Clayton Kershaw and company. He also swiped his third base of the season, while raising his season slash to .281/.373/.385.

Carpenter's leadoff homer in the bottom of the first inning was the only run the Cardinals scored until a failed rally in the bottom of the ninth. Carpenter finished the day 2-for-4, breaking out of a minor slump.

Matt Carpenter reached base in all six of his trips to the plate as the Cardinals downed the Royals 5-2 in 11 innings Wednesday night in Kansas City.

Carpenter's biggest hit was a go-ahead RBI double in the top of the 11th inning that gave the Cardinals a lead they would not relinquish. Carpenter also had another double earlier in the game and tallied three singles while walking once. The second baseman now boasts a .395 on-base percentage, which is higher than his .392 mark from 2013, when he finished fourth in the National League MVP balloting.

With two more hits tonight, Carpenter is batting .377 (20-for-53) over his last 12 games. The recent hot streak has improved his batting average 29 points, from .256 to .285. It would be nice to see more power, but he's still a valuable option in mixed leagues.

Carpenter has made 14 starts in the outfield as a major leaguer, so it's not unfamiliar territory for him. Most of those came in 2012, though. He made just one start and one other appearance in right field last year.

Carpenter is still searching for his power stroke, as the double was just his second of the year to go with one home run. In all, the third baseman is batting .281/.377/.333. One thing that isn't lacking is his runs scored, as Sunday's was his 18th run scored this season after scoring 126 last year.
