Trevor Cahill P ARI 8 Hrs

Trevor Cahill surrendered seven runs -- three earned -- over four innings Wednesday in a loss to the Tigers.

It was an ugly game all around for the Diamondbacks, who lost 11-5. Cahill didn't walk a batter and struck out three, but the Detroit offense tagged him for eight hits. He's 1-7 with a 5.72 ERA and 1.71 WHIP this season.

Diamondbacks recalled RHP Trevor Cahill from Triple-A Reno.

Cahill was roughed up in his final start with Reno on Saturday, yielding four earned runs on five walks and five hits over just four innings. The right-hander is not a good fantasy bet for the second half of the 2014 season.

Trevor Cahill struck out six over six shutout innings in a start for Triple-A Reno Wednesday.

It was his best outing since being sent down to the minors to stretch out and hopefully rediscover his form. "His location was outstanding with all his pitches," Diamondbacks farm director Mike Bell said. "He gave up a couple hits and walks after the third, but he managed the innings by making big pitches to keep Tacoma off the board. Overall, he was very good." Cahill should get a shot in the Arizona rotation sometime after the All-Star break.

Diamondbacks optioned RHP Trevor Cahill to High-A Visalia.

Cahill was removed from the Diamondbacks' 40-man roster last week via optional waivers. The 26-year-old will get a fresh start in the California League and try to work his way back up to the Arizona rotation. He had a 5.66 ERA in 41 1/3 innings this season with the D'Backs.

Jack Magruder of FOX Sports Arizona reports that the Diamondbacks have placed Trevor Cahill on optional waivers.

This means that the Diamondbacks can pass him through waivers without another team claiming him. Cahill could always turn down the minor league assignment and test free agency, but he has indicated that he's open to sticking around. He's getting the $16.9 million left on his contract no matter what.

Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers indicated Monday that Trevor Cahill has agreed to go to the minor leagues once he clears waivers.

The move to designate Cahill for assignment makes a little more sense now. Cahill can technically refuse a minor league option and would still get the around $16.9 million owed to him, but it sounds like he's agreed to work out his issues in the minors. The righty has actually pitched well since being moved to the bullpen (3.04 ERA, 27 strikeouts over 23 2/3 innings), but he'd return to starting in the minors.

Diamondbacks designated RHP Trevor Cahill for assignment.

Manager Kirk Gibson said earlier in the day that he was thinking of putting Cahill back in the rotation, but obviously the club has gone in another direction. Cahill is being paid $7.7 million this season, is owed $12 million next year and has a $800,000 is buyouts for club options in 2016 and 2017, so it's obviously a big decision. He'll clear waivers but should be picked up quickly by a team in need of rotation help.

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said Monday that he's exploring the idea of moving Trevor Cahill back into the rotation.

Cahill was booted from the rotation after posting a 9.17 ERA over his first four starts. He's been much better since being moved to the bullpen, putting up a 3.04 ERA while striking out 27 across 23 2/3 innings. It's not clear who would lose their rotation spot in favor of Cahill.

Trevor Cahill pitched a perfect 12th inning for his first career save Friday against the Dodgers.

The Diamondbacks certainly didn't intend for Cahill's first relief appearance to be in a save situation, but they had little choice but to go to him in the 12th and he got the job done quickly, retiring Andre Ethier, Yasiel Puig and Justin Turner in order. Cahill still doesn't have any fantasy value at the moment.

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson announced Monday that Trevor Cahill has been moved to the bullpen.

Gibby put Cahill on notice last week, and the sinkerballer responded by allowing seven runs -- six earned -- over four innings against the Dodgers Sunday. Cahill figures to get another shot to start if he can iron things out in the bullpen, but for now Arizona will go with Mike Bolsinger in the rotation.
