Cahill remains in the mix for the Diamondbacks' final rotation spot this spring.

It seems as though three spots are sewn up by Josh Collmenter, Jeremy Hellickson, and Rubby De La Rosa. Further, Chase Anderson may have the upper hand in the battle for the No. 4 role, leaving Cahill to compete with Allen Webster, Dan Hudson, Robbie Ray, and a few others for the last spot. Cahill's contract may push the D-backs to give him another look as a starter to begin the season, but his limited Cactus League opportunities this spring have been a mixed big following his most recent appearance against the Brewers on Friday when he allowed three runs on seven hits over four innings. Cahill has issued four walks over eight innings this spring, but he's been working on a new delivery with the hope of remedying the ongoing command issues he's dealt with over the past couple of seasons.

Cahill has impressed new manager Chip Hale with his revamped delivery this spring, and he may have an inside track to one of the openings in the Arizona rotation, the Arizona Republic reports. "If we see what we've seen in the bullpen, he'll be one of our five," Hale said. "There's no doubt. He's here and he's had success in the past in the major leagues."

In addition to working on his new delivery, Cahill's contract could afford him the first opportunity for one of the final spots in the Arizona rotation as the season gets underway. In order to stick, he will need to pitch at a level similar to his 2012 numbers (3.78 ERA, 1.29 WHIP), when he was an effective innings eater for the Diamondbacks.

Cahill is throwing with a revamped arm slot this spring, The Arizona Republic reports.

Cahill has ditched his three-quarters arm slot for a motion that's closer to being straight over the top. Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale and pitching coach Mike Harkey both said they're happy with what they've seen thus far, but Cahill acknowledged that he needs to face batters before truly evaluating the change. It makes sense for the 26-year-old righty to try something new, following a 2014 campaign that saw him post a 5.61 ERA and 1.61 WHIP. Cahill still figures to compete for a rotation spot this spring.

Cahill struggled yet again on Friday against the Cardinals, as he gave up four runs on six hits and three walks over 5.1 innings pitched in a no-decision.

The 26-year old Cahill is a far cry from the pitcher he was in 2010, and even 2012, although there's still hope for a turnaround in the future. Cahill has always given away too many free passes, but this season he's been extremely hittable. He ends the season with a 5.61 ERA.

Cahill allowed five runs on 10 hits and eight strikeouts in five innings in the Diamondbacks' 5-1 loss to the Rockies on Saturday.

Cahill was rocked for a season-high 10 hits. The five runs are the most he's allowed in three starts. However, it fits nicely with his 5.55 ERA. The two home runs are also the most he's given up this season.

Cahill allowed three runs on two hits and four walks while striking out four in 5.2 innings in the Diamondbacks' 7-2 loss to the Dodgers on Sunday.

Surprisingly, 5.2 innings is the longest Cahill have gone in three starts. He's lost all three starts to move to 3-11 on the season. He has allowed three or fewer runs in nine of 10 starts.

Cahill allowed three runs on five hits and six walks while striking out five in four innings in the Diamondbacks' 3-1 loss to the Padres on Monday.

Other than a six-run outing on August 26, Cahill hasn't more than three runs since becoming a starter in July. However, the six walks were a season-high. Cahill has slowly moved his ERA down in the past few months, but it still stands at 5.06 for the year.

Cahill allowed six earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three in 3.1 innings in the Diamondbacks' 9-5 loss to the Dodgers on Tuesday.

It was the most runs Cahill has allowed in a game since July 23. He had allowed seven runs in his last four starts prior to Tuesday. It's also his first loss since July. His ERA rose from 4.54 to 4.98 as a result of the poor start.

Cahill struck out five and walked four while giving up two runs on six hits over 6.1 innings Wednesday against Washington.

He did not factor in the decision, and while the four walks Wednesday are a concern, Cahill seems to have made progress since his demotion to the minors earlier this season as he now carries a 25:10 K:BB over 33 innings in five starts since returning to the Arizona rotation. He'll look to sustain the momentum in his next start Tuesday against the Dodgers at Chase Field.
