Daniel Descalso 2B/SS.. COL 10 Days

Descalso signed a two-year contract with the Rockies on Tuesday.

Although he was healthy all year, Descalso logged just 184 plate appearances with St. Louis in 2014 while serving in a utility role. He's just a .243/.313/.341 career hitter at the major league level, with 10 homers and 16 steals in 529 games, but Descalso can play all around the infield and is an upgrade over Charlie Culberson. The 28-year-old Descalso may even work into a starting role at second if DJ LeMahieu struggles or suffers an injury in the spring.

The Cardinals declined to tender Descalso a contract, Jon Morosi of Fox Sports reports.

St. Louis has enough infield depth to make Descalso expendable. He hit .242/.333/.311 with zero home runs and one steal in 184 plate appearances last season, and will have more real life value than fantasy value with whichever team he catches on with for 2015.

Descalso went 3-for-3 with a walk while making a spot start at shortstop Saturday.

With the DH spot available for the Cards playing on the road in Baltimore, Jhonny Peralta was given a day off from defensive responsibilities. The three-hit effort pushed Descalso's line to .198/.257/.248 for the season.

Daniel Descalso left Tuesday's game versus the Padres after being hit on the right knee by a pitch.

Descalso was able to limp down to first base but was then replaced by pinch-runner Peter Bourjos. He'll likely be re-evaluated Wednesday before the Cardinals know how much time he might miss.

Cardinals and INF Daniel Descalso avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.29 million contract.

Descalso requested $1.65 million and was offered $930,000 from the Cardinals when arbitration figures were exchanged earlier this month, so the two sides ultimately settled at the midpoint. The 29-year-old will function as a utility infielder for St. Louis in 2014.

Daniel Descalso requested $1.65 million and was offered $930,000 from the Cardinals when arbitration figures were exchanged on Friday.

The 27-year-old infielder is the only member of the Cardinals heading to arbitration. He'll earn a sizable raise over the $511,000 that he took home in 2013 to function in a utility role for the Cardinals.

Daniel Descalso is starting at shortstop for the Cardinals in Game 4 of the NLCS Tuesday.

The Cards are struggling offensively, so they'll sacrifice defense in getting Descalso in for Pete Kozma, who is hitless in the series. Descalso has four hits in 13 career at-bats versus Dodgers starter Ricky Nolasco.

Daniel Descalso socked a pair of solo homers and scored three runs, leading the Cardinals in a 13-3 rout over the Reds on Friday.

Descalso finished the night 3-for-5. He's now hitting .265/.321/.423 on the season with five homers and 29 RBI in 196 at-bats. His multi-position eligibility makes him a fine middle infield option in NL-only leagues.
