Daniel Descalso 2B/SS.. STL 19 Days

Descalso went 3-for-3 with a walk while making a spot start at shortstop Saturday.

With the DH spot available for the Cards playing on the road in Baltimore, Jhonny Peralta was given a day off from defensive responsibilities. The three-hit effort pushed Descalso's line to .198/.257/.248 for the season.

Daniel Descalso left Tuesday's game versus the Padres after being hit on the right knee by a pitch.

Descalso was able to limp down to first base but was then replaced by pinch-runner Peter Bourjos. He'll likely be re-evaluated Wednesday before the Cardinals know how much time he might miss.

Cardinals and INF Daniel Descalso avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.29 million contract.

Descalso requested $1.65 million and was offered $930,000 from the Cardinals when arbitration figures were exchanged earlier this month, so the two sides ultimately settled at the midpoint. The 29-year-old will function as a utility infielder for St. Louis in 2014.

Daniel Descalso requested $1.65 million and was offered $930,000 from the Cardinals when arbitration figures were exchanged on Friday.

The 27-year-old infielder is the only member of the Cardinals heading to arbitration. He'll earn a sizable raise over the $511,000 that he took home in 2013 to function in a utility role for the Cardinals.

Daniel Descalso is starting at shortstop for the Cardinals in Game 4 of the NLCS Tuesday.

The Cards are struggling offensively, so they'll sacrifice defense in getting Descalso in for Pete Kozma, who is hitless in the series. Descalso has four hits in 13 career at-bats versus Dodgers starter Ricky Nolasco.

Daniel Descalso socked a pair of solo homers and scored three runs, leading the Cardinals in a 13-3 rout over the Reds on Friday.

Descalso finished the night 3-for-5. He's now hitting .265/.321/.423 on the season with five homers and 29 RBI in 196 at-bats. His multi-position eligibility makes him a fine middle infield option in NL-only leagues.

Daniel Descalso went 0-for-5 in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader and is 1-for-17 since the All-Star break.

Descalso was a nice surprise for the Cardinals in the first half, hitting .275/.339/.425 in 167 at-bats, and it looked like he might take the shortstop job away from Pete Kozma earlier this month. Now that he's joined Kozma in slumping, the Cardinals have to be giving more thought to trying to upgrade at short in a trade. If it happens, Descalso would keep his job as a utilityman, though he'd lose some at-bats. Kozma would probably be sent down.

Daniel Descalso is starting at shortstop Wednesday for the fifth time in the Cardinals' past six games.

Pete Kozma will ride the pine yet again. Descalso is hitting .328/.366/.516 since June 1 and has suddenly become relevant in pretty much all NL-only fantasy leagues. The regression will happen eventually, but he is worth owning while he's hot and playing regularly.
