Matt Reynolds RP ARI 6 Days

Reynolds (elbow) threw 29 pitches in a live batting practice session Friday.

Friday's live session marked Reynolds' first since he underwent Tommy John surgery last September. Live batting practice is typically one of the final hurdles a pitcher must clear before heading out for a rehab assignment, and while the team may want to see him throw several sessions, there's at least a chance Reynolds is assigned to an affiliate in the next week or so. The lefty has a career 3.58 ERA and 1.26 WHIP over 153.1 innings.

Reynolds (elbow) will face live hitting for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last September, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.

Reynolds hasn't pitched in the majors since last June, but appears to be moving towards a return by facing live hitting for the first time since the UCL strain. He is still a ways away from potentially rejoining the bullpen, requiring a good amount of outings before the team will decide what to do with him.

Diamondbacks and LHP Matt Reynolds agreed to a one-year contract extension with a club option for 2015.

Reynolds posted a 1.98 ERA in 30 appearances this season prior to undergoing Tommy John surgery last month. He might not pitch again until 2015, but the Diamondbacks have at least secured some cost certainty. The 29-year-old is under team control through 2016.

Matt Reynolds (elbow) felt renewed pain during Thursday's side session and will visit a doctor to get checked out again.

Reynolds had recently hoped to return before the end of the 2013 season, but this setback should completely rule out that possibility. He's been sidelined since June 9 with a slight tear in his UCL.
