Rangers general manager Jon Daniels confirmed Saturday that Mitch Moreland will serve as the team's primary designated hitter in 2014.

Daniels also indicated that he'll use a rotation to fill the position, while Moreland fills in at first base and in the outfield. It appears as though he's in line for regular playing time and at least 500 at-bats, which makes him a nice target in the later rounds of mixed league drafts due to his power potential.

Mitch Moreland requested $3.25 million and was offered $2.025 million from the Rangers when arbitration figures were exchanged on Friday.

The 28-year-old will likely wind up making around $2.5 million to serve in a utility role for the Rangers in 2014. He continues to have nice power upside, but his fantasy value takes a hit if he isn't in the Rangers lineup on a nightly basis.

Mitch Moreland is working hard this winter to prepare himself for the utility role that he will assume with the Rangers in 2014.

With the acquisitions of Prince Fielder and Shin-Soo Choo this winter, Moreland is now a man without a position. He'll serve as the primary backup at first base, spend some time in the corner outfield positions and also see plenty of work in the DH spot against right-handed pitching. Unless he's traded before the season to a team that plans on giving him 500 or more at-bats, his mixed league fantasy value will be limited.

Jayson Stark of ESPN writes that Rangers first baseman Mitch Moreland is a possible fit with the Rays.

It makes sense, as Moreland doesn't have a clear role with the Rangers after the Prince Fielder trade. The Rays remain interested in re-signing James Loney to play first base and have also reportedly shown interest in a trade for the Mets' Ike Davis.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Rangers are currently leaning toward keeping Mitch Moreland.

Moreland's name has surfaced in trade rumors since last week's acquisition of Prince Fielder, but Rosenthal hears that the Rangers could find playing time for him between the DH spot, right field and first base against right-handed pitching. Of course, things could change depending on what else the Rangers do this winter, so he could find himself on the trade block eventually.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times writes that Mitch Moreland was a trade possibility for the Rays before the Rangers' deal for Prince Fielder and is "maybe more so now."

It sounds like Topkin is just speculating, but he's right in that Moreland would seem to be a fit. The Rangers are expected to pursue more offensive help even after the acquisition of Fielder, so Moreland surely would be in line for more playing time elsewhere. He's eligible for arbitration for the first time this winter.

First base is no longer an option for Mitch Moreland now that the Rangers have Prince Fielder, Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said.

Daniels did say that the team won't give up on Moreland despite acquiring the slugging first baseman. Moreland batted .232/.299/.437 with 23 home runs in 2013. The Rangers will likely now listen to offers for the 28-year-old, and he'll probably see some at-bats as a designated hitter if he stays with the team through the offseason. Whatever his role, his fantasy value obviously goes down with the acquisition of Fielder.

Mitch Moreland went 0-for-3 with a walk Saturday against the Athletics.

While Moreland drew a walk with two outs in the ninth inning, he remains hitless over his last 21 at-bats. His batting line is down to .233/.300/.449 for the year.

Mitch Moreland went 2-for-4 with a double and homer in a 5-1 win against Oakland on Tuesday.

It was the first time Moreland had collected multiple extra-base hits in a game since July 5. AL-only owners know they must stomach Moreland's poor average (.246) and lack of wheels (zero steals) to enjoy his 22 homers, 57 RBI and 54 runs scored.

Mitch Moreland hit his 20th homer versus the Mariners on Wednesday.

Moreland's OPS is down a bit from last year, but he's reached new highs with 20 homers and 55 RBI this year. He doesn't get much credit, but he's been a nice little asset as a platoon first baseman.
