Mitch Moreland (ankle) hopes to return in 3-4 weeks.

The original expectation was that Moreland would miss three months after ankle reconstruction surgery, but he'll actually have a less serious surgery in hopes of returning sooner. It's promising news for the Rangers, but they are still in quite a bind at first base.

Mitch Moreland will undergo surgery on his left ankle this week.

The hits keep coming for the Rangers. It's not clear when Moreland suffered the injury, but he's expected to be sidelined for the next three months, meaning this could potentially be a season-ending injury. Donnie Murphy will be used at first base for now, but general manager Jon Daniels will consider other internal and possibly external options.

Mitch Moreland has been dropped from third to sixth in the Rangers lineup for Saturday's game against the Indians.

Moreland had been planted in that third slot since Prince Fielder went on the disabled list, but he has struggled in recent weeks. Michael Choice has been moved up to the leadoff spot in the order with Shin-Soo Choo hitting third.

Mitch Moreland has been moved up to the third spot in the Rangers lineup for Saturday's game against the Tigers.

Moreland has been pressed into everyday duty and is being asked to carry a much bigger load of the offense with Prince Fielder out for the season. The move to the middle of the lineup only adds to his already increasing fantasy value.

Mitch Moreland delivered a two-run double on Friday, plating the Rangers only runs in a losing effort against the Tigers.

Moreland finished the night 1-for-3. His two-run double off Anibal Sanchez got the Rangers off to a quick start in the second inning, but that would end up being the only damage they'd do on the night. Moreland is now hitting .277/.325/.420 with a pair of homers and 17 RBI on the season. Now faced with everyday at-bats at first base in the absence of Prince Fielder, he's relevant in all mixed leagues.

Mitch Moreland hit a two-run homer and doubled as the Rangers bested the Blue Jays 6-2 on Sunday.

Moreland's line is far from what was expected of him, as the homer was just his second in 99 at-bats this year. He does have a .283 batting average, though. Last year, he hit 23 homers with a .232 average in 147 at-bats. Since he's getting the job done even as a different type of hitter, the Rangers will keep starting him against right-handers. He's not playing versus lefties at all.

Mitch Moreland hit his first home run Wednesday against the Red Sox.

It was a solo shot off Jake Peavy in the seventh inning. Moreland has started eight of the Rangers' nine games so far, including one out of two against left-handers. He should sit against lefties now that Kevin Kouzmanoff is up as an alternative at DH.

Mitch Moreland went 2-for-4 with a double, triple, and two runs scored on Wednesday against the Phillies.

Moreland was a big part of the Rangers' comeback. Trailing 3-0 in the seventh, Moreland tripled and scored. Then, in the ninth, Moreland doubled and scored as the Rangers turned in a three-run bottom of the ninth to emerge victorious. With Prince Fielder at first base now, Moreland has shifted into the DH role and should see the lion's share of the time there.

Mitch Moreland said Thursday that his oblique is "fine."

Moreland has been held out of action since leaving a Cactus League game Monday with tightness in his left oblique muscle, but it's not a strain and he should be fine for the start of the 2014 regular season. He's expected to serve as the Rangers' primary DH this year.

Mitch Moreland (oblique) worked out Tuesday and is not scheduled for an MRI.

The Rangers are keeping a close eye on Moreland's left oblique issue, but it doesn't appear it will be a long-term issue unless it gets worse. At the very least, though, the club figures to hold him out of action for a handful of days.
