Zack Cozart SS CIN 6 Days

Reds manager Bryan Price said Saturday that Cozart will not face competition for his starting job from Eugenio Suarez during spring training, C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Suarez, who was acquired from Detroit in the Alfredo Simon trade, will be merely a fallback option in case Cozart gets hurt. It widely believed that Suarez would have an outside shot at the job given his abilities at the dish and Cozart's struggles last season (.221/.268/.300), but apparently the team wants Cozart to focus on improving offensively rather than looking over his shoulder.

Cozart agreed to a one-year, $2.35 million contract with the Reds on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Jon Heyman of reports.

As good as Cozart was in the field last season (12.1 UZR), he was equally bad at the plate, as evidenced by his 61 OPS+. He hit above .250 in just one month of the season, and finished with a .172/.213/.276 batting line in September. The Reds acquired shortstop Eugenio Suarez from the Tigers in December, and while Cozart figures to keep the starting job to open the year, he'll have to perform at a higher level to maintain his spot in the lineup.

Cozart is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Pirates.

Cozart struggles against Pirates starter Francisco Liriano -- he is just 3-for-17 (.176) lifetime -- so he will sit out Saturday after starting the last seven games. Ramon Santiago will get the start at shortstop in Cozart's place.

Cozart went 2-for-3 with one RBI on Friday against the Cardinals.

The expectations for Cozart this season were much greater than what he's produced. Unfortunately for fantasy owners, he kept his batting average around the .225 mark all season without supplying any of the power he did the previous two seasons.

Cozart is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs.

Cozart has struggled offensively of late, with just two hits in his past six starts. He'll join several other Reds regulars on the bench Wednesday, as Kristopher Negron will get the start at shortstop.

Cozart is not in the Reds' lineup Monday, the Cincinnati Enquirer's John Fay reports.

There's no denying Cozart's defensive ability, but there will always be some clamoring for the Reds to improve at the shortstop position because of his significant offensive limitations (.570 OPS). Jake Elmore will get the start at short Monday.

Cozart (wrist) went 0-for-3 in his return to the starting lineup Saturday.

The dismal season continues for the Reds' shortstop, but his glove will continue to make him a steady presence in the Cincinnati lineup despite a .226/.273/.302 line.

Cozart (wrist) is back in the lineup Saturday against the Mets.

Cozart will step back in against right-hander Dillon Gee for his first start since Aug. 30, after battling wrist soreness throughout the week. While Cozart is sitting with just .578 OPS for the season, the lowest among all qualified hitters, he still has a 2.6 WAR thanks to his outstanding defense, so he should continue to see near-everyday time for Cincinnati.

Cozart (wrist) remains out of the lineup Friday against the Mets.

This was the first day Cozart would be able to return, as he did not travel with the team on the last road trip, but it seems he still needs at least another day to recover from his wrist injury. Ramon Santiago will get the start at shortstop and Cozart should continue to be considered day-to-day.

Cozart has a sore right wrist and will not be available to play until Friday at the earliest,'s Mark Sheldon reports.

He will miss his third straight game Wednesday after his wife gave birth to the couple's first child on Tuesday, and while the plan was for Cozart to get back in the lineup Thursday, that won't be possible because of this wrist injury. He is remaining in Cincinnati and will rejoin the team when they return home from Baltimore.
