Manager Matt Williams expects Desmond (back) to return to the lineup on Thursday, the Washington Post reports.

The power-hitting shortstop will be a key part of the Nationals' offense and defense as they try to lock up the NL East title over the next few weeks, so it's reassuring to see that his back issue isn't serious.

Desmond (bacK) is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Braves.

Desmond was forced out of Tuesday's game because of lower back tightness, and will miss Wednesday's game as well. The injury is not believed to be serious, so he should be considered day-to-day at this point unless the team releases something that suggests otherwise. Danny Espinosa will start at shortstop Wednesday and bat seventh for the Nationals.

Desmond left Tuesday's game with lower-back tightness, and it is not believed to be serious, MASN's Dan Kolko reports.

It doesn't sound like Desmond will miss much time with the ailing back, but if he does, look for Danny Espinosa to fill in for him at shortstop. Consider the Nationals' starting shortstop day-to-day for now.

Desmond left Tuesday's game against the Braves in the sixth inning, Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post reports.

It wasn't obvious what was ailing Desmond but it seems an injury is in play, as he was replaced at short by Danny Espinosa to begin the top of the sixth inning. Desmond singled, struck out twice and committed a throwing error prior to exiting. Look for the team to provide additional information following the game.

Desmond went 1-for-4 Monday with an RBI single as the Nationals topped the Braves 2-1.

Desmond has hit safely in four straight, but has struggled a bit at the plate this month. After hitting .264 in August, Desmond is batting only .194 thus far in September. For the year the shortstop is now hitting .248 with 22 homers and 82 RBI.

Desmond scored a run and knocked in one RBI against the Mariners on Friday as he went 2-for-5, while hitting his 22nd homer (399 feet) of the season.

There aren't many shortstops in the league that have produced more than Desmond has this season, especially when you consider the power he provides. Desmond (.253/.310/.430) drove in his 81st RBI on the season and has an excellent shot of being a 20/20 guy by year's end. If he could bring his batting average up Desmond would certainly be an elite shortstop.

Desmond went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored Sunday.

Desmond placed an 0-for-9 streak over the previous three games in the rear view mirror with a big day at the plate Sunday. He now totals 21 home runs for the year, and will have a chance to best his career-high of 25 with over a month left before the end of the season.

Desmond is out of the lineup Thursday against the Diamondbacks, Dan Kolko of MASNsports.com reports.

Desmond will be afforded a rare day off, his first since July 11 and just his third of the season, with Danny Espinosa manning short in the finale against Arizona. Although Desmond's average is more than 30 points below his 2013 mark, he's already matched him home run total from a season ago (20) and needs just four RBI to set a new career high.

Desmond was locked in Tuesday, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, a run and a stolen base in a win over the Diamondbacks.

Interestingly enough, Desmond's four steaks came in relatively unspectacular fashion (a pair of two-run singles in the third and sixth innings), all while he faced a team-low eight pitches on the night. Nonetheless, the Nats' middle infielder is up to 77 RBI -- three shy of his career high from 2013 -- with 15 swipes and 52 runs to go with his 20 bombs on the year, making him a very valuable member of both the NL East-leading Nationals and fantasy rosters everywhere.

Desmond went 1-for-3 Tuesday with two runs scored, two RBI and his 20th home run of the season.

That's back-to-back games in which Desmond has gone long, and he has three blasts in his last five games. The shortstop is now just five home runs and eight RBI away from tying his previous career highs.
