Ian Desmond SS WAS 1 Day

Desmond is out of the lineup Sunday against the Marlins.

Desmond has been a staple at shortstop for the Nationals this season, starting 149 of their 154 games up to this point. With the team having already clinched their playoff spot, however, Desmond will give way to Danny Espinosa in what looks to be a regular day of rest. Manager Matt Williams also elected to give regulars Denard Span and Jayson Werth a day off for the Sunday afternoon tilt.

Desmond is not in the lineup Wednesday, MLB.com's Mark Bowman reports.

The Nationals regulars are all getting the day off after clinching a playoff berth Tuesday, and probably celebrating into the night. Danny Espinosa will start at shortstop Wednesday, and Desmond should be back in the lineup in short order.

Desmond went 2-for-4 Tuesday with a double, two runs scored, two RBI and his 23rd home run of the season.

The home run is his first since the end of August, but over his last 10 games Desmond is hitting .333 (13-for-39) with seven RBI and nine runs scored.

Desmond (back) is in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Mets.

As expected, Desmond will return for the opener against the Mets after missing the finale against Atlanta with a lower-back issue. The 28-year-old Desmond is 4-for-9 with two homers in his career against Thursday's starter Bartolo Colon.

Manager Matt Williams expects Desmond (back) to return to the lineup on Thursday, the Washington Post reports.

The power-hitting shortstop will be a key part of the Nationals' offense and defense as they try to lock up the NL East title over the next few weeks, so it's reassuring to see that his back issue isn't serious.

Desmond (bacK) is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Braves.

Desmond was forced out of Tuesday's game because of lower back tightness, and will miss Wednesday's game as well. The injury is not believed to be serious, so he should be considered day-to-day at this point unless the team releases something that suggests otherwise. Danny Espinosa will start at shortstop Wednesday and bat seventh for the Nationals.

Desmond left Tuesday's game with lower-back tightness, and it is not believed to be serious, MASN's Dan Kolko reports.

It doesn't sound like Desmond will miss much time with the ailing back, but if he does, look for Danny Espinosa to fill in for him at shortstop. Consider the Nationals' starting shortstop day-to-day for now.

Desmond left Tuesday's game against the Braves in the sixth inning, Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post reports.

It wasn't obvious what was ailing Desmond but it seems an injury is in play, as he was replaced at short by Danny Espinosa to begin the top of the sixth inning. Desmond singled, struck out twice and committed a throwing error prior to exiting. Look for the team to provide additional information following the game.

Desmond went 1-for-4 Monday with an RBI single as the Nationals topped the Braves 2-1.

Desmond has hit safely in four straight, but has struggled a bit at the plate this month. After hitting .264 in August, Desmond is batting only .194 thus far in September. For the year the shortstop is now hitting .248 with 22 homers and 82 RBI.

Desmond scored a run and knocked in one RBI against the Mariners on Friday as he went 2-for-5, while hitting his 22nd homer (399 feet) of the season.

There aren't many shortstops in the league that have produced more than Desmond has this season, especially when you consider the power he provides. Desmond (.253/.310/.430) drove in his 81st RBI on the season and has an excellent shot of being a 20/20 guy by year's end. If he could bring his batting average up Desmond would certainly be an elite shortstop.
