Jhoulys Chacin SP COL 26 Days

Rockies placed RHP Jhoulys Chacin on the 15-day disabled list.

Chacin is working back from a strained right shoulder, so this move is purely precautionary. Chacin is up to throwing 50 pitches, so he remains on track for an early May return.

Jhoulys Chacin (shoulder) will throw a 50-pitch bullpen session Friday using all of his pitches.

The right-hander has been nursing a right shoulder strain since the beginning of camp, but he appears to be making real progress, noting Friday that the shoulder feels "perfect." The right-hander isn't expected to re-join the Rockies' rotation until early May.

Jhoulys Chacin (shoulder) threw off the slope of the mound on Thursday.

It's the first time he's done so since being diagnosed with a strained right shoulder early on in spring training. Chacin is hoping to throw a bullpen session in the next few days. The right-hander isn't expected to re-join the Rockies' rotation until early May.

Rockies assistant general manager Bill Geivett said Wednesday that the Rockies are estimating an early May return for Jhoulys Chacin.

"He's in his throwing program now getting ready to progress to the mound for bullpens," Geivett said during a Twitter chat. "If all goes well, ETA is early May." The timetable represents a setback for Chacin, who is throwing from 120 feet as he works back from a right shoulder strain in February. For his part, Chacin has said his shoulder feels fine and he's hoping to throw a bullpen later this week or early next week.

Jhoulys Chacin (shoulder) will throw from 120 feet on Wednesday.

He threw at 90 feet on Monday. "If I start feeling good, I'll keep moving [back]," Chacin said. "The good thing is I'm feeling good. My ball is coming out good. Everything feels fine, I feel strong. I'm very happy everything is working out." The 26-year-old right-hander was diagnosed with a shoulder strain in late February and is headed for the disabled list to begin the year, barring a miraculous recovery.

Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports that it's "almost a certainty" that Jhoulys Chacin (shoulder) will begin the season on the disabled list.

Chacin is progressing, as he long-tossed from 90 feet Monday with no issues and will move to 120 feet Wednesday. However, he's yet to throw off a mound all spring and simply doesn't have enough time to get ready by Opening Day. "If I start feeling good, I'll keep moving [back]," Chacin said. "The good thing is I'm feeling good. My ball is coming out good. Everything feels fine, I feel strong. I'm very happy everything is working out." The righty added that he is "thinking about the long term, not rushing and getting set back."

Jhoulys Chacin (shoulder) played catch on Thursday afternoon in Rockies camp.

The workout went smoothly, but there's no timetable for Chacin's return to the mound and the clock is ticking toward Opening Day. The 26-year-old right-hander was diagnosed with a shoulder strain in late February and may have to miss the first few weeks of the regular season. This situation obviously dents his fantasy value.

Jhoulys Chacin (shoulder) will play catch Thursday.

It'll be a light session of only about a dozen tosses. Chacin's sore right shoulder has been responding well to strengthening exercises, but the real test will come when he returns to a mound and resumes throwing at full speed. The 26-year-old right-hander seems likely to miss at least one turn in Colorado's regular-season rotation.

Jhoulys Chacin (shoulder) told the Denver Post that he plans to begin playing light catch in 2-3 days.

Chacin has been shut down for nine days and is happy with the way his strained shoulder has responded to the period of rest. "It feels really good. I threw a little medicine ball, a small one, and it felt fine today," the right-hander said Monday morning. "I am going to be OK. It's definitely getting better." There's still an outside shot that he'll be ready for the first week of the regular season.

Jhoulys Chacin (shoulder) will resume some light throwing in a few days.

The right-hander began light strength work Friday as he rehabs his right shoulder strain. Chacin still appears to have a shot to be ready on Opening Day, but he'll have to keep progressing from here on out without any speed bumps. The 26-year-old would be the club's Opening Day starter if he's ready physically.
