Brett Hayes went 0-for-3 while filling in for Salvador Perez on Wednesday and is 0-for-22 as the Royals' backup catcher this season.

The Royals let George Kottaras go and decided to save money by keeping Hayes as their backup, figuring he'd play less than any other backup in the league. That'd be for the best, since he really is a brutal hitter. He's at .207 with nine homers and a 124/21 K/BB ratio in 372 career at-bats.

The financials of the deal aren't known. Hayes played in just five games for the Royals last season, batting .278 with one homer. He'll compete for the backup job behind Salvador Perez.
