Red Sox released OF Andres Torres.

Torres exercised the out clause in his minor league contract after batting .292/.311/.472 with three home runs and eight RBI in 18 games at Triple-A Pawtucket. The 36-year-old outfielder may already have another deal lined up, but he's doubtful to reach the majors in 2014.

Torres has surgery last August to remove bone spurs from his left Achilles, but he was expected to be healthy a while ago. The 36-year-old sports a career .242/.317/.382 batting line over parts of nine major league seasons and will provide the Red Sox with some veteran depth at all three outfield positions.

Giants declined OF Andres Torres' $3 million option for the 2014 season.

The Giants will instead pay a $500,000 buyout. The 35-year-old outfielder is coming of a .250/.302/.342 line in 103 games with the Giants, but missed the final month of the regular season after undergoing surgery to remove bone spurs from his left Achilles. He's expected to be ready for the start of spring training, and should be able to find a team willing to let him compete for a reserve outfielder role.

This was done merely done as a procedural move to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Angel Pagan's activation. Torres recently underwent surgery to remove bone spurs from his left Achilles, and is expected to be sidelined for the next six months.

The assumption when he went on the DL last week was that he'd likely need surgery. Torres is a free agent this winter, so he'll surely have to settle for a deal full of incentives. He won't be recovered by the time spring training starts.
