Landon Powell told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle that he has been designated for assignment.
The move hasn't been officially announced by the team, but he will be cleared to make room for the A's new acquisitions in the Gio Gonzalez deal. Powell, who turns 30 in March, batted just .171/.246/.225 with one home run, four RBI and a .471 OPS over 122 plate appearances at the major-league level this season. He has thrown out 29 of 73 (39.7 percent) attempted basestealers during his career.
