Jordan Zimmermann SP WAS 6 Months

Zimmermann (shoulder) will start Sunday's regular-season finale against the Marlins.

The Nats were thinking about pushing Zimmermann's next start back, after he was drilled in the shoulder by a Casey McGehee line drive last weekend, but Wednesday's rainout made it a no-brainer. Not only does pushing Zimmermann back give him a few extra days to let his bruising diminish, it also lines him up to start Game 2 of the NLDS next Saturday (Oct. 4).

Zimmerman (shoulder) could have his next start pushed back, James Wagner of the Washington Post reports.

Zimmerman took a liner off the shoulder in his last start Saturday and is dealing with a fairly severe bruise. With the NL East title sewn up, the Nats may push Zimmerman's next start back one day to ensure he's not dealing with any lingering pain when the postseason begins. If that's the case, Zimmerman could pitch Saturday, rather than throwing one of Friday's two games agains the Marlins.

The Nationals will re-evaluate Zimmermann's pitching shoulder on Sunday after he got hit with a Casey McGahee line drive during Saturday's game, the Washington Post reports. "We're not going to take any chances there," Nats manager Matt Williams said. "I would assume he'll be pretty sore [Sunday]. He's got a pretty good welt on his shoulder."

Zimmermann avoided serious injury, but if the Nationals still have a cushion in the race for the NL's best record they may elect to skip his final regular season start as a precaution.

Zimmermann earned the victory Saturday as he allowed five hits and two runs- one earned- in six innings to go along with four strikeouts against the Marlins.

Zimmermann was struck on the shoulder by a line drive from Casey McGehee to start the sixth inning but managed to stay in the game and finished the inning. Saturday's win was Zimmermann's third in a row and his fifth in six games. He's on fire, as the Nationals have now won their 10th consecutive game in a game started by Zimmermann.

Zimmermann was quite efficient in this one, getting ahead of 75 percent of all the batters he faced with first-pitch strikes (18-of-24). He's now a solid 11-5 with a 1.13 WHIP and 2.93 ERA -- numbers that are both slightly better than his career marks of 1.16 and 3.31 -- through 178 innings (29 starts) this season.

Zimmermann struck out eight and walked two while allowing two runs on four hits over 6.1 innings against the Dodgers on Wednesday.

He did not factor in the decision, however, as the two division leaders needed 14 frames to close out their three-game series. Zimmermann is lined up for two starts next week, first against the Braves at home Tuesday before a road start against the Mets at Citi Field on September 14.

Zimmermann was solid Saturday, tossing eight innings of seven-hit, two-run ball while fanning eight and not issuing a walk in a win over the visiting Giants.

He settled in nicely after serving up a two-run bomb to Hunter Pence in the top of the first. Zimmermann is now 9-5 with a 2.93 ERA and 1.13 WHIP with 140 strikeouts in 159.2 innings (26 starts) this season and has been great for the Nats and fantasy owners alike in 2014.

Zimmermann did not record a decision Monday against the Diamondbacks as he pitched seven innings and allowed three runs, four hits and three walks to go along with two strikeouts.

Zimmermann has a sparkling 2.97 ERA and 1.15 WHIP for the season, but lack of run support and bullpen meltdowns have resulted in him coming away with only eight wins. He should continue to be a solid starting option down the stretch, but wins may continue to be hard to come by.
