Velez was reassigned to minor league camp Thursday, Bill Chastain of MLB.com reports. Velez provides some versatility both at the dish (switch-hitter) and in the field, but he's nothing more than an organizational depth option at this point in his career. While Velez went 5-for-15 with one strikeout with the big club this spring, he's hit just .241/.287/.367 in parts of five seasons at the major league level, the last of which was in 2011.

Velez signed a minor-league contract containing a spring training invite with the Rays, Marc Topkin if the Tampa Bay Times reports. This is a depth move for the Rays, with Velez offering no fantasy value.

Brewers reassigned UTIL Eugenio Velez, OF Kevin Mattison, C Matt Pagnozzi and RHP Dustin Molleken to minor league camp. The 31-year-old Velez had a chance to make the team as a utility player with a strong showing in Arizona, but hit a paltry .056 (1-for-18) in his limited chances. He'll provide depth at Triple-A.

Eugenio Velez elected free agency. Velez did not appear in a game at the major league level in 2012, but posted a solid .280/.358/.449 line with 11 homers, 58 RBI and 37 steals at Triple-A Memphis. The switch-hitting utility man could generate some interest on the free agent market.
