Valbuena went 2-for-2 with a solo home run Thursday in the Astros' 6-3 Grapefruit League win over the Phillies.

Valbuena, who was acquired by the Astros via trade in January, homered in the fourth inning off Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez. He'll compete with Matt Dominguez this spring for the Astros' starting third base spot.

Valbuena is batting just .231 against left-handed pitching this season, and with the Cubs facing one of the best southpaws in the game in Clayton Kershaw, it made sense to give him a day off. Righty Mike Olt will man the hot corner in Valbuena's stead.

With Anthony Rizzo (back) on the shelf, Valbuena has been positioned in the heart of the order for the Cubs in recent weeks. He's now hitting .247/.328/.445 on the year, but it's likely that he's auditioning for a role elsewhere in 2015 as the Cubs have a slew of younger options pounding on the door for big league roster spots.
