Utley said his ankle has improved since he arrived at camp last month, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. "I'm making a little progress," Utley said. "Obviously, I wish it was a little quicker, but I'm trying to be smart about it. It seems like it's making some progressions every few days. As long as it continues to do that, I'd like to get out there as soon as possible."

The Phillies announced Monday that Utley would not play in any spring training games this week. His ankle is still swollen. Utley said he is not going to take any chances trying to get on the field too quickly which could lead to other problems. His chronic knee condition has caused him to miss significant time in the past, and it is likely he wants to avoid anything that might aggravate that condition.

Utley (ankle) did not work out Monday and he will not play in games for "a while," according to general manager Ruben Amaro, MLB.com's Todd Zolecki reports.

There has been no word on whether Utley's ankle injury could linger into the regular season, but the Phillies will not give him starts this spring until he is 100 percent healthy. Utley always misses time with injuries, and this just serves as a nice preseason reminder of that fact. Cesar Hernandez will get the start at second base in Tuesday's Grapefruit League opener.
