The Phillies are in rebuild mode, but Utley is content to stay with the club for now. He is currently dealing with an ankle sprain that he suffered when he stepped on a baseball in January.

Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports reported Wednesday that the two sides discussed Utley in the course of the Rollins trade talks. Utley has said in the past his preference is to stay in Philly, but he could change his mind now that the Phillies are starting to dismantle their roster as part of the rebuilding process.

The Phillies do not have a prospect at second base that is ready for playing time in the majors, so keeping Utley in the lineup won't impact the playing time of younger guys. Utley has 10 and 5 rights which allows him to block any trade. Thus far, he has expressed no interest in going to another team.

Utley, a San Diego native, will get to observe the Phillies' final game in his hometown from the bench. His absence is likely for both maintenance purposes and matchup-related reasons, as lefty Robbie Erlin will toe the rubber for the Padres.
