Cubs signed INF/OF Emilio Bonifacio to a minor league contract.

He will receive an invitation to spring training as well. It's unclear how he'll be utilized in Chicago, but the speedy 28-year-old could find plenty of at-bats at third base or second base, and represents a tremendous source of speed in fantasy leagues if he finds regular playing time.

Royals released INF/OF Emilio Bonifacio.

Bonifacio cleared release waivers, so he is now a free agent and can sign with any club. He's owed $575,000 from the Royals in the form of termination pay. Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reports that Bonifacio has drawn interest from at least nine teams, including the Orioles. He should land somewhere quickly.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that numerous teams are showing interest in Emilio Bonifacio.

Bonifacio was designated for assignment by the Royals last weekend and is now on release waivers. Rosenthal finds it unlikely he'll be claimed, as the claiming team would owe him his entire $3.5 million salary for 2014. Assuming he becomes a free agent at 2 p.m. ET tomorrow, the Royals would owe him $575,000 in termination pay.

Emilio Bonifacio has been placed on release waivers.

Bonifacio was designated for assignment by the Royals at the beginning of February and a trade partner has not been found. The 28-year-old utilityman batted just .243 with a .625 OPS in 2013 and he's owed a $3.5 million salary in 2014, but he has good speed and should find a new home before the official start of spring training.

The Orioles have some interest in Emilio Bonifacio, Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports.

The Royals designated Bonifacio for assignment February 1 and they have 10 days from that date to trade or release him, with a trade being the most likely outcome. The Dodgers were another club believed to be a good fit, but they signed a similar player in Justin Turner to a minor league deal Wednesday. Bonifacio will make $3.5 million this season and could fill a utility role for the O's.

Royals designated INF/OF Emilio Bonifacio for assignment.

The surprising move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the recently signed Bruce Chen. The Royals apparently believe that the versatile Bonifacio was expendable after signing Omar Infante to serve as their everyday second baseman, and he should attract enough interest in the coming days that they'll be able to work out a trade. Fantasy owners should hope that he lands in a favorable spot with regular playing time, as his exceptional speed can be extremely valuable.

Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports that Emilio Bonifacio has drawn trade interest from several clubs.

The 28-year-old performed well for the Royals down the stretch after arriving from Toronto, slashing .285/.352/.348 with 11 RBI and 16 stolen bases. Dutton also notes that the Royals may decide to tender a contract to Chris Getz, as an insurance policy in case they do decide to deal Bonifacio away. Fantasy owners can only hope that Bonifacio and his exceptional wheels wind up with a starting job someplace.

Emilio Bonifacio was ejected from Saturday's game against the Tigers after he slammed his helmet to the ground after getting picked off by Doug Fister in the third inning.

Bonifacio walked in the third inning, and was nabbed on a bang-bang play at first base during Eric Hosmer's at-bat. Replays showed that Bonifacio had every right to be upset, as he appeared to get back safely. He then threw his helmet, not in the direction of umpire James Hoye, but got the boot anyhow. Chris Getz replaced him in the lineup.

Emilio Bonifacio went 2-for-4 with a walk, double, two steals, an RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's victory over the Blue Jays.

Bonifacio, who stole three bases in this weekend's series against his former team, may end up swinging some AL-only leagues with his legs. In 18 games since coming over from the Blue Jays, Bonifacio has swiped 11 bags (and hasn't been caught). He's batting .297 with the Royals after slashing just .218/.258/.321 earlier this year north of the border.
