CC Sabathia SP NYY 22 Days

CC Sabathia will undergo an MRI after experiencing swelling in his right knee Thursday following Wednesday's rehab appearance.

Even if the MRI comes back clean, Yankees manager Joe Girardi indicated Thursday that Sabathia would likely be shut down for a while. The big left-hander had been set to return immediately after the All-Star break, but obviously that won't happen now. A timetable for his return should be available after the MRI results come back.

CC Sabathia (knee) allowed five runs in 3 2/3 innings Wednesday in a rehab start at Double-A Trenton.

The good news is that he sat 90-91 mph with his fastball and at one point touched 94 mph. "The secondary pitches weren't that good, but my fastball I felt was coming off pretty good," Sabathia said after the game. "I feel good health-wise, so I'll be ready to go." He is likely to rejoin the Yankees' rotation after the All-Star break.

Yankees transferred LHP CC Sabathia from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

It's a procedural move that doesn't affect Sabathia's timetable. He is scheduled to make a rehab start on Wednesday with Double-A Trenton and could rejoin the Yankees' starting rotation soon after the All-Star break.

CC Sabathia (knee) will make his next minor league rehab start Wednesday with Double-A Trenton.

It was previously announced that Sabathia would pitch on Thursday, but the Yankees are apparently moving him up a day. It's a little odd, as he just made his first rehab start on Saturday, so he'll be pitching on short-rest. Sabathia threw 37 pitches in his first rehab outing and is expected to progress to 50 in this one.

CC Sabathia (knee) said that he "couldn't be happier" with how he felt physically during his first rehab start with High-A Tampa on Saturday.

"Definitely need to work on my secondary pitches," said Sabathia. "I couldn't be happier with the way I felt physically out there. It feels good to be back out there competing. Hopefully I can get back in the big leagues pretty quick." Sabathia allowed two runs and three hits over 2 1/3 innings for Tampa and was sitting in the 87-89 mph range with his fastball. He could rejoin the Yankees' rotation around the All-Star break.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Tuesday that there's a chance CC Sabathia (knee) will return by the All-Star break.

Sabathia was cleared to begin a rehab assignment with High-A Tampa on Saturday after getting through a 34-pitch simulated game Tuesday with no issues. The Yanks had been looking at late July as a timetable for the lefty, but it sounds like he could be back a little sooner. "It's good, he'll start again on Saturday," said Girardi. "Forty to 45 pitches. ... Everything came out well. Obviously, you're curious to see how he feels tomorrow, but he felt it was successful."

CC Sabathia (knee) threw 34 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday.

It was his first time facing live hitters since going down with a right knee injury in early May. The next step should be a start with the team's Gulf Coast League affiliate on Saturday. The southpaw isn't expected to join the Yankees' rotation until after the All-Star break, but he's making tangible progress.

Sabathia, who has been sidelined since early May with a right knee injury, threw a 36-pitch bullpen session Saturday and said he felt strong. If all goes well Tuesday, he'll pitch in a game next Saturday. The veteran southpaw isn't expected to rejoin the Yankees rotation until after the All-Star break, but he's making progress.

The Yankees think it will be another six weeks before CC Sabathia (knee) returns from the disabled list.

The club had been pegging early July for the big left-hander's return, but Sabathia just resumed throwing from a mound Monday and the Yanks are looking at it like he's at the beginning of spring training. For what it's worth, Sabathia hopes he can "skip some steps" and beat the six-week timetable. "That's what they're saying, but I've been throwing the whole time and I feel pretty good," Sabathia said. "Obviously we have to be cautious, not wanting to hurt my arm, but we'll see. I feel pretty good, so hopefully we can skip some steps. A few more steps and hopefully no setbacks, just build up and get into a game here pretty soon."

CC Sabathia (knee) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Monday.

Sabathia only threw fastballs and changeups. He'll throw another bullpen session Wednesday, this time incorporating all of his pitches, and will be reevaluated from there. It's nice to hear that he's making progress, but he's still likely a few weeks away from rejoining the Yankees.
