Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday that while he expects Sergio Romo to get the majority of the save chances this season, he wants to be careful with his workload.

Romo staked his claim on the closer role down the stretch last year and into the postseason, but throwing the slider as often as he does can put a lot of strain on his arm. With that in mind, the Giants could give him the occasional day off, opening the door for other relievers to get save chances. Romo should be excellent when called upon, but be careful about counting on him as an elite closer option in fantasy leagues.

Sergio Romo requested $4.5 million and was offered $2.675 million by the Giants when arbitration figures were exchanged Friday.

Romo, who is arbitration-eligible for the second time, earned $1.575 million last season while posting a 1.79 ERA, 14 saves and a 63/10 K/BB ratio over 55 1/3 innings. His request isn't unreasonable, but settling around the midpoint of $3.59 million could be a decent compromise.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said that while Sergio Romo is his closer, he plans "to give him some help."

That means Jeremy Affeldt, Javier Lopez and Santiago Casilla could be in line for some save opportunities, as well. Of course, all managers like to have a set closer, and Bochy might just be waiting for Romo to run away with the job. He's capable of doing so.
